A leather expert on TikTok is putting designer handbags to the ultimate test – with fire, acetone and scissors.

Performing scrupulous surgery on luxe leather sacks, “Tanner Leatherstein,” who boasts more than 757,000 followers on TikTok, brings the shock factor to the world of animal hide-based accessories.

Determining the quality of leather, craftsmanship and more, the TikToker, whose real name is Volkan Yilmaz, told The Post that his “life purpose is to help people understand and experience leather better.”

I love it. Would like to see more of this. We've all experienced the snickers at seeing the price tag on a bag we could make 10X better for a fraction of the cost. This fellow documents and shares his findings. bwahahaha

  2. I thought this expensive purse looked like a bag of trash, and it turns out that it was inspired by one. I'm having a giggle fit.

The luxury fashion house’s shiny drawstring bag — which is made out of calfskin leather, emblazoned with a subtle logo and comes in the basic Hefty bag black along with the solid Glad-esque white as well as yellow and blue — is making its way to stores after debuting in the Fall 2022 Ready-to-Wear collection in Paris in March.

  3. I gotta go poke around but you all should have the same permissions you did before. Contributing members don't have the CFM designation because it's their secondary permission set. I kinda like that "certified mental freaks" but no, that's not why I typed it. I had to fill in the box to continue, so I typed CF. "controversial forum" member.:gathering:

Gimme a few minutes. I'm glad you let me know there was an issue.

  4. If you clicked the X the cookies remember you don't want to see it again. It just says that we welcome all conversation about leather and leatherwork, but no more controversial topics on the main board, then directs to my post here. You're on my "include" list @fredk I'll add them shortly, after the thunderstorm passes.

Our function on this corner of the Internet is to provide a place for leatherworkers to discuss and share anything leather related. That is what we do. Thank you everyone for your understanding and support.

  5. The problem was that there was no way to keep the posts from that forum from showing on the "unread content" feature, and it turned off many of our regulars who had to scroll though all the posts about things that aren't leatherwork. I struggled with this. When the pandemic hit, many members wanted to talk to their peers about what they were seeing, and get perspective from people they know and respect. I felt like censoring posts was unAmerican, but it just kept getting out of hand. I don't mind everyone sharing opinions, because mostly people are respectful or clear in explaining what they think so both sides think about their point. But not everyone can deal with this, and they come to leatherworker.net to talk about leather and get away from all the stuff on Twitter and Facebook. I don't want these leatherworkers who want to participate in discussions like this silenced, but I've got to have it off the main board. So I fixed it so THAT forum can be seen if you send me a PM and it won't show to anybody that isn't in it. Let's keep dinner table conversation on the main board, and keep our world grievances in the private room. Please tell people who have left because of this grand experiment to come back. We aren't going to flog leatherworkers with distracting posts unless they specifically ask for it.

I also want to apologize to Wiz and Northmount for not figuring out a hack sooner, and putting you in awkward positions when you tried to defend free speech, but personally thought the posts had no business on a leatherwork forum. Tom, you were right from the start, and you tried to tell me. You have always added a reasonable voice to our discussions.

I'm going to add you regulars, because you all seem to have tough skin and like this exchange of ideas. Everyone else just wants to ignore you folks. The good news is that you get to keep all the awful jokes.

Thank you to all the members that put up with this. It is now safe to log in and take advantage of all the forum features. If you forgot how to log in, send an email to admin@leatherworker.net and I'll get you fixed up. We are going to be updating shortly, and I'm excited about the new things we'll be able to offer.

  7. The US held elections last week, and the results aren't final. People all over the world have strong opinions about our president, and leatherworkers experiencing cognitive dissonance are seeking their peers for discussions. That's  fine, but this is a leatherwork forum, and some people come here to get away from all the hoopla. We've had some posts that are controversial, and we hate censorship, but we don't want to keep flogging our members with political posts. SO, I'm going to create a new section in the "off topic" area where you can post about politics. If you want to participate or ignore, the choice is up to you. We're not going to censor it but we will not allow personal attacks or running with scissors. You might want to ignore that section if your skin isn't thick. I'm going to reveal and move the political posts in a few minutes. Suggestions welcome.

  8. I used to manage a Tandy store in the 90s. We were open 54 hours a week and expected to run the store, teach classes and ship orders. I discovered it could take me an hour to sell a bag of rivets and a setter, and then I had to teach the customer how to do it. This was necessary retail service, but didn't help my numbers and made me look bad to corporate. So I made sure the coffee was fresh, and I let my regulars sit at the cutting table and work on their projects and tell fish tales. When I was busy, I could yell "Hey, Mike, will you show this gentlemen how to set a rivet?" My guys were great. Sometimes when I'd get back to the table they had convinced the customer to max out his credit card on shiny new tools. That was possible because the customers had confidence they were getting what they needed, and that people would help them learn as they went along. So, inadvertently, that's how this forum was born. I wanted it to be friendly like the back table, and give people the confidence to try the project, or a place to show off just how awesome their project turned out. If some rivets are swapped or hides are traded, all the better. If friendships are made, mentorships happen or we establish world peace through coordinated hammer taps, I will not have lived in vain.

  9. I damaged the ad server  during the server migration. I tried to fix it, but it wasn't cooperative, so I uninstalled it and made a new one.

People ask me how they can help the forum? Participation makes it more fun for everybody and is the most important thing you can do. Share what worked, what didn't, and what you made.

And if the forum has helped you, please click the ads, and please tell our sponsors when you place your order that you appreciate them supporting the forum. Let them know they are making a difference in your day.

    Thank you!

  10. I arranged to the new server, and am downloading the stuff I need now. We're going to be offline for a day or two, but when we come back, we'll be faster and slicker than before. I will put up an announcement of what to expect as soon as I have an idea.

It is perfectly safe to override the security warnings the browsers are showing. There is nothing on this site that can do anything to your computer.

Thank you everyone for your good wishes. I need everyone to put on their tinfoil hat and cross their fingers as soon as we go offline.

  11. I'm working on this issue right now. The site is secure, but the protocol it is using is outdated, and that's why you're getting the error. We've reached the point where we need to move to a new server. I'll be scheduling that soon and I'll put a note up when we can expect downtime. In the meantime, the best I can suggest is to use a browser like Chrome, or do like Chuck and tell Edge it's okay and don't bug you again. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. We know getting errors is annoying.

  12. I set the SSL cert to auto renew, got an email saying that the renewal was coming up and all would be well, and the certificate expired.  Meanwhile you are correct. LW doesn’t represent a security threat no matter what. It will not steal your info or do much more than try to remember what you already read, which is pretty much all we use cookies for. Mike that’s a lot of info. I need to read and then I will have questions, as usual! Thanks everyone for your patience and support.
