  1. Hi Bob. Looking good so far. Are you moulding the liner on the same mould as the outer? If you are the liner will never fit because of material thickness.
  2. Hand stitching for me. Mainly because I want my products to be hand stitched.
  3. Its such a shame the Tandy stamps are so poor. Especially since I only live about an hour from the uk store. As much as I would love to buy some Barry king tools I would have to pay 20% tax plus import duty when they arrived. Does anyone know a decent uk supplier?
  4. Thank you colt. I'll post a PIC when Its done & that's a cracking bit carving.
  5. May ask what are the essentials tools I should replace first? I would definitely like to get a smooth beverler. Also I have been asked to carve a name, will I need a angled or hollow ground blade? Thank you for taking the time to reply Bob
  6. I had a piece of 5mm scrap to play with.... Wow, heavier leather is much nicer to use!
  7. Thank you for the tips colt, at the moment I just can't afford to get a piece of granite. Tboyce I took your advice.... I should of checked first... The tools that come with the kit are plated, it came off almost instantly & revealed a bronze colour....
  8. Amazeballs! Havere you consisderd doing a YouTube tutorial?
  9. Also thank you for the encouragement I'm loving this carving stuff so far, I'm not a fan of the Sheridan style though, I can certainly respect the craftsmanship but its not my taste.
  10. Thank you for the feed back guys. I was wrong about the thickness, its 3/4 oz not 5/6oz. I shall take everything you said on board, I am a little nervous about cutting deeper though. The tools aren't the best quality, the swivel blade needed a lot of work until it felt nice going through the leather. Mostly though the oil marks are down to operater error. Here's another piece I did before I read the replies
  11. I would really appreciate some newbie tips. I'll be tooling on 2mm cheap tooling side from tandy
  12. Personally I would use the safety beveler that Tandy sells. I'm sure the gurus on here would have better suggestions, some of pros would probably just use their round knife.
  13. Just a suggestion... Buy some cheap rolling pins, saw in half and you 2 mallets for the price of one.
  14. I like your thinking! I know a tattooist so I might give a shout later.
  15. Hi cheryl . I used a goods Japan stitching chisel & I don't know what I did wrong to keep the holes open. Its 8 spi and I used 0.8mm white tiger thread. I'm guessing its either I punched too hard or its because I used super Sheene before stitching. Possibly it could be because the pro stain doesn't penetrate very deep. I don't think the holes are too big though because the needles where actually difficult to get through. I would never drill a hole for stitching... Surely that would weaken the leather? Also not a sewing machine in sight... I must be doing something wrong if my stitching looks machine done!
  16. Sorry biglew I just read over my post and it came out a little short..It wasn't meant too. So I apolagise. Thank you for taking the time to post a link for the videos. Nige in particular is an outstanding leather worker, I actually purchased his wallet pack, very well presented.
  17. Hi biglew, Thank you for the videos but they are ones I've watched many many times & this definitely not my first project.... The stitching was straight until I burnished the edge but because I used the belly it kind of squished which I really wasn't expecting.
  18. Hi Karina, thank you for letting me know... I hate technology. It should be fixed now.
  19. Hi guys. So I finally bit the bullet and bought a cheap tooling side from Tandy & a couple of eco flo pro water stains. This is the first time I've worked with unfinished leather & boy was it a steep learning curve! This is a purse/long wallet I made for my better half. I used the belly section... Won't do that again! Also I had no idea plain veg tan would be so hard to keep clean! http://s36.photobucket.com/user/redochreforest/slideshow/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-10 Sorry its a link but the forum won't let me upload from my tablet & I can't use a PC. I would love any pointers on improving the design... I know I need to improve my edging & stitching skills. Thank you, Andy
  20. I bet those are going to be amazing when they bed in!
  21. Nicely done! I made my own too but it's not as nice your one..... I just used an old bed slat. It would be worth cementing some scrap leather to the Jaws.
