    shoo-fly

heres a shoo-fly that i whipped up the other day. nothing crazy, but it's the second knot i've braided with roo hide, and i really like it.
  6. a set of yak hair reins that finished a couple days ago. the tassles are from the owners horse, and it's my first real attempt at horse hair braiding. i usually braid a pineapple knot at the end, but i thought i'd try something different. i think it turned out okay what about you folks?
  7. absolutely incredible!! on occasion i've tried to work with horsehair, and i always get frusturated that there's all these little tiny hairs sticking out everywhere, and it ends up looking like something my dog found on the road and chewed on for a while! thanks for sharing. it's really amazing.
  8. i agree with alan. i've had to use alot of dry cut rawhide lately, and i hate it! it would be faster for me just to start from scratch, but it's too cold here now to build my own. personaly, i prefer cutting tring by hand. i woul think that if oyu had a cuting machine, you would loose some of your control in cutting. maybe i'm just a little flakey, but i like getting ot know the feel of my strings before i even start working with them.

    ring knot

that looks great. i wish i could produce a bosal like that. and i do like the dark rawhide. when you figure out how its done, let us know!
  10. this is what i ment sorry for the cunfusion
  11. i have admired Luis Ortegas work for many years. I hope one day to be able to produce art work like his...
  12. i built myself a set, but i didn't use a pattern i just looked at some pictures, then drew a real-sized profile pattern. i cut out two and pinned them to my stirrups to make sure that i could get my foot in all the way. then i laid them out on the table and put the tips (where your toe would be) together, and i placed the heel part (the part that will be attached to your stirrup bolt) the same distance apart as the meacurement of the stirrup. in otherwords, if your stirrup measure 4 1/2 across at the bolt, then thats how far apart the heel of the pattern needs to be. be sure to lay the patterns down on another piece of paper, so that when you get them set up, you can trace out the top piece. some people have their taps built in three pieces like thise. i used these steps and taped all three pieces together, then cut out my leather in one piece, and it worked well I hope that all wasn't too confusing... :scratchhead:

    nose button

looks good to me! keep up the good work! bosals are alot of fun to make. i've only made a few, but they grow on you
  14. heres an addition to my armitas. my brother made me the knife last year, and anyone who has spent any significant time around horses knows how important it can be to have a knife handy, i whipped up a quick sheath last knight. it has two laces that loop down through the lace on the apron, so i can really put it anywhere i want on the waist band of the armitas.
  15. naw...already got those for her. for the honeymoon...
  16. so sorry, guys!! i sometimes forget that not everyone that has anything to do with leather also is inot horses, and not everyone tha's into horses uses the same gear! they're not for my wife, they are really for her horse...
  17. I just finished these for the wife for Christmas. It's kind of step by step. I didn't have any tracing paper, so I drew it on some heavy construction paper, then cut it out and free handed the inside of the pattern on the leather.
  18. hey, ya'll. i have a question for anyone who has ever dona any amount of rope making. I would love to get my hands on a twisting machine, or even some plans to make one. I could really boost up my productivity if i coudl get my hands on something. Thanks!
  19. a curb strap goes on the back of a bit, for a horse. it is used to either put leverage on the jaw to get the horse to slow down or stop, or on sertain types of bits, it's just to keep the bit from going al the way through the mouth. it's a cowboy thing...
  20. Curb strap I just finished for a client. Nothing too amazing...but if they think it's good, then I'm happy!
  21. Thanks for the compliments! Spencer G, I did cut all the fringe by hand...it sucked! My right hand is a little sore now, but it was all worth it. Traditionaly, armitas were made with deer hide. The buckaroos would have a set of summer armitas, and a set of woolies (full length chaps made out of angora, bear or buffalo) for the winter time. I built these ot of a cowhide that a freind gave me for my birthday. He's a blacksmith, and he uses the same kind of hide to build his aprons out of. You can see on the apron of these ones I ran out of long pieces to cut my fringe, so I had to piece a smaller piece in. Good thing they were for me!
  22. Just built these yesterday. No metal fasteners at all.
  23. I need help. I've been getting my mohair ubraidit. they are normally very good about supplying everything I need, but recently, they can't seem to keep anything in stock. I would love to continue using them, I want to be loyal to folks who have gone out of the way to take care of me, but I have orders to fill and I need to get more supplies. Does anyone know of someone else that supplies good quality mohair? I need large quantities. I tried getting in touch with the folks at spurwink, but didn't have any luck. Thanks!!
  24. HAha!! Details, details!! Steve, I rode him for about 8 months in a mohair cinch, and for some reason he HATED it. It was funny, b/c we always had rope or mohair cinches growing up, but he doesn't like it abit. The Neoprene one is his favorite. I nkow, I can't be in the cool-guys-cowboy-club anymore, but thats the way it goes...
