after I warmed it up on the stove it went back to yellow/ gold color, I have been keeping an eye on it for a couple hours and it seems to be staying normal, I think you're right, when it gets cold it congeal, I'm glad that was the problem, I was about ready to throw it away and get a new gallon. Thanks for the info do you know what the shelf life is on neatsfoot oil after you open the bottle ?

trying tan coat for the 1st time and my question is what is the dry time between the neatsfoot oil and the tan coat ? I put 2 coats of tan coat on some scrap undyed leather just to see what it was going to look like and I checked it out this morning and I like the way it looks and when I bent the leather it didn't crack .Your opinions on the dry time and the tan kote as a finish would be greatly appreciated.

I have it stored in the basement on a concrete floor, it is unfinished and the tempature is around 66 degrees right now. Is this proper or should I put it somewhere else

does neatsfoot oil get old ? I have a gallon of neatsfoot oil and it's about 3 years old . I poured some out today and it looks weird like it coaguated with water or something, instead of being yellow/ goldish it has a whitish looking stuff in it . So i heated it up in my little pan on the stove ( my girlfriend loves it when I do this ) lol and it looks normal, any ideas ?

yes but the only way I know how to send a pic is if you are on my contact list on my phone, if you could send me your number I could put you in my contacts list then send you a pic , then delete your number, does that sound ok ?

I have a workbench that is about 7 feet long so I just built a drawer that is as long as possible ( 6 foot plus ) and put drawer glides on each side so now I can store my rolls ( flat ) in the drawer ( instead of rolls piled up ) and you could put a lid with a hinge on it to keep out all the dust and crap so your leather would be safe and out of the way. You can make the bench and drawer any size to suit your needs. I hope this helps

well since I am having weird results lately with the resolene finish I will explore the beeswax finish ( over alcohol based bye ) again, I would like all opinions on how well this works on a work belt and how often should it be recoated, thanks guys for any info John from Johns Belt Shop

I have been making belts ( mostly work belts ) for about 5 years now and I would like some good advice on the best way to advertise. I would like to be able to work from home since I can't install granite countertops much longer and I have a few health problems. I don't know much about advertising on the internet but I tried shopify and facebook and nothing happened. I am only charging $65.00 for a 1/4 in thick x 1 3/4 tall full grain leather belt made totally by hand. ( 1 at a time ) to that persons specs. I thought word of mouth would work from the guys at work that I have made belts for but no luck. I have sold approxamatly 30 belts around work so, and I had a sign on my car but still nothing, not sure what direction to turn, any advice would be great

I put beeswax on part of a future belt just for the heck of it ( no previous finish ) so now I'm thinking of stripping the beeswax off and redying it a little darker and making it my new work belt with a beeswax finish to see how long it lasts before I need to re coat it.

nope, bonded leather is the worst you can buy, they are both crap
-
Full Grain leather is the top of the leather chain, the best leather you can buy, Genuine Leather is ALMOST the crapiest leather on the market, it is the worst of the good leather that they glue together and make it look great ( just like a Full Grain belt ) but it is just layers of scraps that are glued together. Full grain leather is all 1 piece , nothing glued together, it is the purest leather you can buy it hasn't been altered or changed in any way but most people see the word GENUINE LEATHER and they think it is the good ( FULL GRAIN LEATHER ) stuff and then they see the price and that is what gets them. EVERYTHING IS ABOUT PRICE. The difference between GENUINE LEATHER and FULL GRAIN LEATHER is like the difference between a YUGO & a MERCEDES I'll spend the money and buy the mercedes. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. PRICE ISN'T EVERYTHING but QUALITY IS .

sorry I hate to correct you but Resolene is water based, it is the only finish I have ever used over fiebings alcohol based dyes. This is the only dye/ finish coat I have used, I haven't tried any oil based dyes or water based dyes, or paints. That is why I am curious about the fiebings water based dyes ( not acrylic paints for leather ) .
-
thank you, I was reading about water based dyes, it said that when they dry and you put on resolene over the top that the dye does not lift like it does with alcohol based dyes, have you heard of this ?

what is the difference between fiebings water based dyes and acrylic dyes ? How well do they hold up on full grain work belts ?

front and back ? I have a dog groomer down the street that told me I should make some and she would try to sell themand that sounded fine until Istared thinking about the back of it and it getting wet from the dog being in the rain or something then Ithought it would turn gross and start to smell then people wouldn't buy them, how is your luck with dog collars ?
-
I see you make dog collars what type of finish do you use ? do you put anything on the back side ?
-
Thanks buddy, I am looking into it right now, I will let you know how things turn out .
-
did you have a lot of business from your web site ? My brother told me about that site and I looked into it but I don't remember why I didn't choose it, I guess I need to spend more time on advertising ( I would sure love to work from home making my belts instead of installing granite countertops, thats what I do for a living right now )

tried that, it made it harder, I melted the beeswax then I just poured in some neatsfoot oil stirred it up on the stove , poured it into some aluminum foil lined little bread tins and let it sit over night, it turned out hard . I'm making this small batch so I can stick my screws in it before I make something, ( it stops the squeeks ) lol. I haven't been on here for a while ( been working around the house ) haven't had any sales for along time, I need to find a new way to advertise. How have you been my friend ? Whats new in your little world ?
-
I have beeswax that I made 50/50 with neatsfoot oil, but I want to take a small part of that and make it a lot softer . What do I add to it to make it a lot softer ?
-
Thanks everybody, for this hide I will go with 2 coats and see if it looks ok,
-
2 different bottles 1 old 1 new, but it’s only happening on the 3rd coat
-
I have been using Resolene for years and never had a problem, the last 2 belts I have made the 3rd coat is drying in little ( rain drops ) ? there is no sign of this while applying the Resolene. I thought maybe my bottle was old so I bought a new bottle and had the same problem ( on the 2nd belt I just noticed last night ). I haven't changed any process , I use the same process on every belt and this is why I have no idea with whats happening. Anybody else having this problem , I hope someone has an answer to this really weird problem. Thanks John John's Belt Shop

you're are into sewing machines, I make tool pouchs for some of the guys at work when asked, I put them together with copper rivets because I don't have a sewing machine, I am looking for an old used machine that will go through 3/8 thick leather ( 2 pieces of 3/16 sewn together around the edges and maybe up the middle to divide it into different pockets for tools ) I would like it to have some kind of flat ( table ? ) around it maybe foot pedal operated ? and american made if possible , do you have any idea where I could find something like this ?
