  1. Probably just going to order from my usual supplier in Ohio, he is cheaper and I get him directly on his cell phone instead of someone else I like that
  2. Moser leather in Hamilton, Ohio, they are the only one I use so far the number is 1-513-889-0500, this should be the cell number of Jim Cox the owner, he is the only person I deal with ( old fashion service )  Nice

Ok. Thank you, I'll give Him a call.  The shipping is a added expense, if thing check out I could end up going there and picking my own sides in person that would be very cool field trip.  Is he a import dealer or are they making there own?

      Thank you again.

he said all his hides are US so good luck on your field trip, I will be ordering some shoulders from him soon

  3. yeah it's still there and the other location is in sandy, I found salt lake leather and findings ( is that the store you were talking about ? didn't know about this place but going to look into it to see if they sell sides and shoulders, when did you live in SLC ?
  4. thanks, I just looked at their web site and I will be calling them Monday to find out a few things, have you ever bought any of their 10 11 oz veg tan economy sides if so what did you think ?
  5. I had to try it once, so I did buy a side and a shoulder because they were on sale and I thought if worse came to worse I would use them for practice. So far besides the bug bite spots the shoulder cuts like butter and the side was ok, I didn't notice much difference between tandy and the other supplier I use from Ohio. All of Tandy's hides are from foreign countries, My supplier in Ohio uses hides from USA and there is no minimum and I can actually call and talk to him directly, but I still keep looking for someone out here that can match his prices and no minimum.
  6. Does anyone know where I can buy ( with no minimum ) veg tan sides and shoulders out west
  7. has anyone used a buffing wheel on a drill to buff the dye on a belt before using beeswax finish if so, what was it
  8. Thanks Tom, the rivets that my Tandy store has are to big for my knife/ marker, pencil holder that I wear on my belt for my full time job. ( I install granite counter tops ) so this is why I have to find another source ( what a pain ) Thanks for the advice on the tools, I actually went to a metal supply store and bought an I- beam about 2 feet long to use as my anvil because I couldn't find a used one at a good price and I have the rest of the tools. I have to have some of my tools for my belts hand made from a guy in Salt Lake City, utah because all these leather working tools are chinese crap and fall apart so easy. Thanks again, John
  9. ok I'm looking for small copper rivets with a head that is 3/8 diameter or less with a shaft that is 1/8 inch and a length that is 1/2 long, does Montana Leather carry these ?
  10. does anyone know where I can find copper rivets and burrs for my belts, I'm looking for #6 x 1/2 inch long #6 has a top of 3/8 in diameter ( or even a little smaller would be ok. Hope someone out there can tell me of a good source. thanks
  11. I've only been doing this for a couple of years now ( and still have a lot to learn ) but I always add a foot to the waist size so I have enough length and I usually leave 4 1/2 - 5 inches from the last hole to the tip of the belt .
  12. what are some of the techniques for fading alcohol dyes on belts ?
  13. I'm looking for american made hand tools for my leather belt making business, especially an oblong punch that makes a 1/4 " wide X 1 1/4 long hole for the tongue slot and a decent rivet setter ( to smash and round the copper rivet ) not these little tools that Tandy sells.
  14. I am thinking about using beeswax over my alcohol based dyes for my belts, I have been using Resolene but don't like the plastic look ( and yes I mix it 50/50 ) . My question is if I use the natural beeswax with some neatsfoot oil in it what is the best technique to apply and exactly to buff it with and how long do I wait until I buff it ? How often should it be reconditioned and with what ?
  15. how many coats of beeswax/ neatsfoot oil ( 50/50 mix ) should it take to become waterproof ? I've put 2-3 coats on then test with a drop of water and it just soaks right in and leaves a water mark ( but dries out for the most part after a while )
  16. hey Maxx have a question, I have been looking for a oblong punch for the buckle prong, I bought one from C S OSBORNE  tools the length of the hole is fine 1 1/4 but it is to narrow 3/16 wide do you or anyone on here know where to get an oblong punch that is wider than 3/16 for the buckles I use on my 1 3/4 wide belts ?

  17. Hey Tinker I have a question for you, I have mixed my pure beeswax and neatsfoot oil 50/50 it is cooling as we speak. My question is what is the best thing to apply this with ( fingers, old towel, old t-shirt ) and how long do I wait before trying to buff this off  ? and what is the best thing to buff it off with ?  thanks Utah Leather

Don't know about TT, . . . but I put it on usually with my fingers, . . . first dose gets kinda smudged into the pores, . . . then a light once over with a heat gun, . . . add another coat, . . . smudge a bit more, . . . once again with the gun, . . . then polish, . . . and see how much more I need / want to put on to get the desired effect.

I also just grab the cake and start smearing sometimes, . . . kinda depends on my mood.

      May God bless,

      Dwight

Sorry, on vacation and didn't see this. I use my fingers as well. As far as buffing I wait until the product has started to get cloudy and is not shiney like when first applied.

  18. I am guessing that you buff in between coats ? how long do u wait until u buff it out ? I tried a old t-shirt once to buff with and it left blue lint on it so I switched to a old towel and that did fine, I wonder if the t-shirt didn't work because I didn't wait long enough to buff ? what do you use to buff with ? utah leather
  19. thank you, I will try this, is this your reciepe for the finish coat ? how many coats to give it a little water protection ? How often should it be reconditioned

  21. had a request from a customer and he asked me if I could smooth off the back of a veg tan belt that I had made for him for his suit, has anyone done this ? if so what steps did you use from John's Belt Shop
  22. I have been using resolene over my alcohol dyed belts, but don't like the plastic look and was trying to find out if I use beeswax mixed with neatsfoot oil as a final coat over the alcohol dye what is the best way to apply it, waiting time before buffing it and what is the best material to buff it with ?. john from John's belt Shop
