Take off the machine to belt pulley and run it. If it's still making the noise. Take off the other belt and spin the reducer by hand. If no noise belts could be too tight or need belt conditioner. If spun by hand and here a noise, possible could be defective bearing in the reducer.

The 31 class machine have a counterwieght on the flywheel. It's barely noticable. A regular pully will be OK as long as your not running it to fast. Best thing maybe to do is mount something on the current flywheel, so machine doesn't vibrate.

Jim, What you have there isn't a singer 7 class, it's a Singer 144W305. It is a 30 inch with reverse. It appears that there is no pedal or chian for the reverse. It would be good for horse blankets, tarps, tents convertible tops, and door panels. It will handle 69 to 207 thread.

Just a suggestion intead of filing the feed dog. Maybe try to use as buffing wheel on it. It seems to work pretty good, by getting the rough egdes, and smoothing at same time.

It's important to have the longer tab for these machines. I have seen people run the short tab, and it has tendency to slip out of the top groove on the shuttle race

You can also put a large piece of cardboard or leather under the spool of thread. Just make sureit's about 1.5" to 2" larger in circumference then the spool of thread. If it's on a thread stand. Also make sure your thread goes straight up into the small loops, and not a little crooked.
