Hello, we hope you are doing well. I just was looking around and didn't see any announcements for the IFoLG show here in Albuquerque this year... I sure would love to see y'all come! I entered a bunch of information on calendar with links and all and saw it post, but then a few minutes later it was no longer there. Are you able to capture that information? If not, are you willing to add it to the calendar and the special events sections? Please let me know and thank you! An old trick we use to tone down the "gloss" is to add talcum powder to the final top coat to cut down on the refraction. It only takes a very small amount and only use talcum or pumice not baby powder. Also, I would highly exhort experimentation to achieve the desired effect. Pabloz -
Dear All Y'all... Since posting this announcement there has been a large number of PMs expressing interest in the contest and clarification of the rules. We have added a cover letter to clarify and simplify the contest entry rules. We thought this would be much easier and beneficial to those entering their work rather than doing a FAQs/Answer routine. There really are no changes to the rules, only clearer explanations. So, please re-visit them and let others know so we're all on the same page and there are no misunderstandings. http://www.leatherwranglers.com/docs/Conte...s_EntryInfo.pdf Let's have fun with this and keep on carving! Clay, OOOOPPPPSSSS...no problem. Call me anyway. Pabloz

Allen, You are absolutely correct. Carbon and nitrogen are two of those elements that are inert to this environment. The most reactive is iron-iron oxide= rust, aluminum-the alox or aluminum oxide you are using, Chromium (but is also some what reatively reactive, chrome oxide is used to polish gem stones) is typically added to slow this process, which if it constitutes >12% of the steel alloy makes it a "stainless steel", vanadium, tungsten, etc., etc., etc. Yes, our alloy is very resistant to this process. I would love to discusss this in more detail but I type rrreeeaaalllyyy slowly so please call me or PM me your number and I'll call you then you can post what you feel is of significance. Pabloz

Allen, The real issue with all blades is the alloy. In our situation we are exposing our blades to a wet environment that has chemicals in it as well. Some leather producers neutralize these chemicals better than others which results in a smoother cutting leather, but there are always some left over. When the blade is exposed to this wet environment it reacts with the water and chemicals and etches, growing microscopic oxide crystals that look like pimples on the surface. This is what causes the drag you feel. The solution to the problem is all in the alloy. I will be presenting, in very graphic ESM detail, this very issue at Wickenberg in March. When you strop the blade after this happens you take off the pimple, polish the surface, wax the metal a little and it will cut smooth again....for a while then the chemical processes starts all over again. I hope this helps a little. Pabloz

Time for another Pay It Forward?

Overseas, OK with me too. -
Grey, Thanks. I'll be honored. Tasha, Yes. Deanna McGuffin, a local bootmaker has reallly tiny hands and wanted one so here is the Shorty version. She was showing it around the Boot and Saddlemakers Show in Wichita Falls and plenty of "when's it going to grow up" type of jokes came out of it and we had lots of fun around it. Then I got a call from a person in Utah who heard about it. He ordered one. Then about two weeks after he got it he called back and ordered two more. I am now realizing that I have to take this "baby" a little more seriously. THANKS, Pabloz

Thanks Tina. You really should post some of your really great calligaphy and flourishes. It would be an element of the art others would love to see.

J, Welcome to the forum...you'll love it. Nice saddle...did you make it? Pabloz

I got a call tonight from a customer who wanted an EXTRA LONG swivel knife. He said that even fully extended his knife was way too short and made his hand cramp. So I asked him to measure the distance from the seat of the yoke to the buttom of the barrel where the blade goes in. He says it's about 3 1/4" to 3 1/2" long. I then asked him how much longer he wants it to be. The reply 1" to an 1 1/2". OK...CAN DO...no problem. SO, here is what a hyper extended swivel knife looks like at 4 1/4" at its shortest. It will still extend another 1 1/2" longer. I love helping people enjoy leathercraft! Pabloz

Would thin walled PVC tubing work??? Something like Class 125/SDR 21, is relatively thin and strong and would only cost +- $7.00 for a 20' stick at your local irrigation supply store. You can also use a hot air gun to soften it and put flares on the ends or bend it. It is usually available in diameters from 3/4" up to 6". PZ

Troy, Happy Birthday....and in the Texas tradition I'll have a Lone Star....ooooppppsss they don't sell that up here so it'll have to be a Shiner Bock in your name. Here's a toast to many more. Hasta, PZ
