"can I Have Your Design?"
DaltonMasterson replied to MdB Leatherworks's topic in Marketing and Advertising
I have traded off several patterns over the years, and am getting ready to send a whole passel of them to another guy overseas. He will not be competing with me, as he has a different market than I do. I have even given patterns to the guy sitting across from me at a gun show. I let the quality of my work outshine his in the end, even if it is the exact same pattern. Build quality stuff, and people will still buy it over the guy building your pattern and not doing the quality that you are. If they buy his, they either have no appreciation for quality, or will be back to visit you later on. But, I see your point too. I dont think I would post a pattern online for the entire world to view. I like what Particle has done. (If its working for you still, Particle). He built an online tutorial on pattern making, showed it for awhile, and now charges a small fee for viewing the video. Basically, he has bettered my pattern making skills, helped the leatherworking community as a whole by creating better artistry, and is still making a buck doing it. At least I hope he is. DM -

I am in need of a 2" bag punch. It can be an old nicked one, as I can rework it as needed. Thanks, DM

I am needing a couple of dummy guns. The FNP 45 I am not even sure they make, but the M&Ps are out there for sure. Thought I would try here before I spend the money to get new ones. Thanks, DM

Howdy folks. There is a new modern gunleather forum over at Downrange.tv's forum. The address is http://www.downrange...53b4&board=38.0 This is also the home for a lot of the Outdoor Channel Wednesday Night at the Range forums as well. Lots of good info here. The goal there is to expand the knowledge of how to make modern gunleather, and mainly to show off your stuff. Questions get asked, answers are given, etc. Its a family type site, and is the sister site to CASCity.com, where the Leather Shop forum is. The CasCity Leather Shop forum does not allow modern gear, only cowboy/western gear, so the obvious choice was to add a modern forum at Downrange.tv to give us another place to show our modern creations. The advantage to posting on these forums is that they are full of firearm fans, which in the end are our customers. If the customer sees what is available, they might just buy it. The only thing that I ask is that you use it as a showcase for your goods, not an infomercial. Keep sales private, and out of the public's view. And by no means, do I want you to leave LW.net. This is a great resource for leatherworkers. The other site just has a customer base to go along with it. Think of it as an online bulletin board to post pics of your goods, and discuss them. I hope to see you there, DM

Alternatives To Tandy Tracing Film?
DaltonMasterson replied to Urshag's topic in Patterns and Templates
I use a pencil, and then spray it with a clear coat of paint, or some sort of "fix" for watercolors. Hairspray will work too. I have just been using the clear cheap paint from Walmart and giving it a few light coats over the pencil marks. This will allow you to erase and adjust patterns before you spray, and then after you can make changes to your original and not destroy your original if you erase. DM -
Just got home from a local gunshow, where I set up with holsters. The Avengers I made using your methods were a hit! I have quite a few orders for them. Thanks again! I even whipped out a couple of patterns from other guns while I was there, which made the customers understand a little bit about the time and thought that goes into a holster. DM

Alternatives To Tandy Tracing Film?
DaltonMasterson replied to Urshag's topic in Patterns and Templates
I havent handled the Tandy version, but is it basically drafting Mylar? That is what I use, and the characteristics described of the Tandy version all apply. There are lots of sources for it, in sheets or in rolls. DM -
Duncan's KelTec P3AT Duncan's Ruger LCP Duncan's KelTec PM9 Unknown brand HK P7 (used and is in spec) Sending you a pm... Thanks, DM

I would add the Kahr 9 to the list as well as a Taurus Judge. I have had lots of requests for the Beretta 92 as well, although have yet to make one. Blackhawk makes a few dummies as well for much cheaper than the Blue guns. Check out Amazon for them. I got mine through Optics Planet (something like that), and the products were great, but the service and shipping times were terrible. But they were under 20 bucks each for a Beretta 92, 1911 with rail, J frame, Sig 226, and a Glock 17. I dont use a press for my holsters, so I don't know how well these would hold up to that. Most of the requests I have had here in Nebraska have been for 3 and 4" 1911s, Glocks, the Sub-compact XD40, and the Judge. DM

I use linen thread waxed with a home brew of beeswax and pitch. I used to use nylon, but on a few projects I found that over time, the stitches started coming loose. I havent had that issue since switching to linen. I do still use nylon on occasion, but its pretty rare, and usually for something for me. All of my customer work gets linen now, as well as any of my vintage items. DM

Alternatives To Tandy Tracing Film?
DaltonMasterson replied to Urshag's topic in Patterns and Templates
While probably not cheaper, I use mylar drafting film. I had a few pieces of it in a desk I brought home, and it works great. One side of mine is frosty, the other side smooth. I put my patterns on it with pencil, and when the pattern is permanent and dont need any changes, I spray a light coat of clear gloss paint over it to preserve the pencil. I have since got a roll of it from an engineering company that does it all on computers now, and have been putting all of my carving patterns into a book for easy browsing. The ones I have are 3' x 2' and 1 sheet can hold a lot of patterns. I used to just roll them up, but have since found an old blueprint drawer to store them flat in. In the long run, its a lot cheaper to me, as I can organize, and have pretty much permanent patterns that are waterproof, and easy to use. I havent worn one out yet, either after about 5 years. DM -
I too, mean no offense to anyone, and would rather help a struggling leatherworker make a better product than belittle them. I was saying, more than anything, that people will either buy my product, or the other guys product. I can only make a better product to sell on my table. I cant make them buy it. DM

Got my order from you today. All looks good! Thanks! DM
