Made this police shield bifold wallet for a friend of mine. He said he was in need of one of these so I told him I would give it a go. Actually came out better than expected. There may be some hope for lack of leather skills after all.

Thank You! Believe it or not I used an Al Stohlman round head knife from Tandy Leather. I trace the pattern with a scribe and then proceed to cut it with the head knife making several passes. Amazingly, the head knife follows the scribe marks like a needle on a phonograph player. I was always curious about using a head knife and finally broke down and bought one. I have to say that I now use this knife 90% of the time when doing leatherwork. It's also great for skiving. It took a little practice to get used to, but once I did, I now can't live without it.

Thanks Gary, I got this pattern from a company in Philadelphia called Make-Supply. I’ve made several of these (without the stamping) for friends and family and they just love them. They’re great for when you are on vacation and there is no need to carry all the normal junk you have in you’re wallet.

Got bored yesterday and felt like I just had to do something. So, I decided to throw this minimalist wallet together and practice my stamping at the same time. I think it came out all right considering I didn't spend a whole lot of time on it.

Just read the article you suggested by Bob Park and it was very good. I was not aware of the glycerin bar soap as opposed to Tragacanth. That's what I love about this site....,You are always learning from others. Thanks for the post!

I have a quick solution for you that just came to mind. . There is a company that I get a lot of my acrylic patterns from. The company is called MakeSupply. Go to their web site: www.makesupply-leather.com There you will find all of their products for sale along with step by step build along videos associated with those products. I can't tell you how much I've learned from Justin who is the owner of MakeSpply. In every one of his videos he shows you the tools and supplies needed in order to complete and put finished edges on Leather projects. Problem solved! lol

There are an array of different types of dyes, coatings, conditioners, and techniques used to finish veg tanned leather. (Too many to list here.). To try and explain what's needed here would do you an injustice. YouTube is your friend. A lot of what I've learned about leathercraft came from the internet. Tandy Leather has a ton of instructional videos on YouTube on just about anything related to leatherworking. You'll find all you need for the basics of finishing leather there. It's a great resource. Beleive it or not, you have one of the best resources right in front of you.....Leatherworker.net. If you go to the section “How It’s Done”, you’ll find a wealth of information and will answer many of your questions.

Made this bifold minimalist wallet with credit a card thumb slot and diagonal cash strap. A neutral edge coat was applied to seal the edges leaving a nice contrast of color. I used a 3 to 4 oz veg tanned leather and was hand sewn with a waxed nylon thread.

Here's another one in the same style I made for a friend of mine, dyed in that bison brown I like so much and a makers mark/ initials. I have to say, for such a simple design, these things are really practical.

After retiring a couple of years ago, I had to find something to do with myself. I worked as an aircraft tech with a major airline for the past 40 years. When you're used to using your hands every day, leatherworking became the perfect substitute and I pretty much fell in love with it.

Here's a little minimalist wallet I made from veg tanned leather and treated with neatsfoot oil. I use these minimalist wallets often while on vacation when there's no need to lug around the oversized style wallets in your back pocket.

Ain't that the truth!

Recently made a vertical wallet from veg tanned leather which incorporated a zippered coin pouch. This was the first time I ever used a zipper in any of my projects and I must say it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’ve started using a water based bison brown dye from Tandy which is starting to become one of my favorites. Of course, my wife confiscated this project as well once she saw it. Looks like I’m going to have to either start hiding my projects or make some really ugly decoys and have them laying around. (LOL)

It was for me as well. I picked up a Neo for IWATA airbrush and a compressor and never looked back. It’s somewhat of a beginners set up but it couldn’t work any better for doing dye jobs. The results I’m getting now far surpass using sheep’s wool and sponges.
