  1. I have: and a broken one Pfaff 332 One Singer 29K58 Cobbler One Singer 66 Red Eye One Singer 31-15 and One Singer 107w1 this last one 107w1 is my newest acquisition, my wife thinks that I am crazy (and I kind of tent to agree) she ask me why do I need so many machines that don't even use that much. I like them all, I will say that the Cobbler 29K58 (made in England) is my favorite, that is the one that I use the most, they are my toys and my hobby, I will add that I DO NOT spend lots of money in them.
  2. Thanks, I will see what I can do. I have to add a note here: I did followed Harry's advise and bought the upper tension unit, replaced it on the machine in question and now the needle crank does touches the tension release lever, therefore the pin is being pushed out and the tension plates are opening to release the pressure on the thread. I still have to time it because still not there yet, but I think that I am close to get it right though. I believe that the trick here is that when replacing the upper tension unit, this one MUST be pushed as far as you can, and notice if the pin is to short or to long, here is where the problem lays! My TWO cents, just in case can help someone else.
  3. Greetings to all, I am having problems with my new (to me) Singer 31-15 that keeps braking the thread all the time. I have been reading to see if I can figure out what's wrong with it, the upper tension is not working. I found this youtube video and at 4:45 on the video, he talks about the Singer 31-15 tension and how the Needle Crank lever should press the Tension release lever to push the pin that release the tension during the stitching cycle, that is not happening on this machine the needle crank lever gets very close to the tension release lever but doesn't touch it and it needs to push it to release the tension and the thread can be pulled without breaking. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.
  4. Not sure if you have seen this video, this guys is very good explaining thing, good luck.
  5. Hi All, I am looking to buy "tire soles" to fix some shoes and make me sandals and whatever else shoes related. Some of you may think I am crazy but I am an old man and when I was growing up in the 70's we used to make sandals and shoes from old tires ( My father was a shoemaker) I am green (big on recycling) and not only that, once you put tires soles on a pair of shoes they will last for ever. So, does anyone knows where to get them? I have Google it and came up with one place Laura Zabo but her prices are high and the soles very small, they did not work for what I want. Other places make shoes, I am looking for soles only. Trying to cut tires is hard, I have try and in Boston MA, I don't have access to pick the right tire to cut it myself. most tires are radials and have Stainless steel wire mesh inside and not worth trying to cut them. Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks!
  6. I just want to give credit to all the people that assist us all newbies having trouble with our old machines or whatever it is we ask here, but specially want to thank Wizcrafts because following his advise on this thread up top, I was able to fix my machine, and boy this old thing is now running as new! Wizcraft you are my hero! Thank you, Thank you! Thank you! and for the rest of people having issues with the cobblers, especially the 29-4, listen to Wizcraft, read his post carefully, follow all steps, and I can almost assure you that you, just like me will be able to fix your 29-4, I was about to give up on this thing, but came across this post and now I am a happy camper, my machine can do 5, or 6 or 7 per inch or whatever length stitch I want thanks to this post. Again, Thank you!
  7. Update: I checked the "Stitch length adjuster" and I think I have it the way that is supposed to be. the "gib" (part 8616 or 82230) Per Constabulary's post: The gib has a notch this notch has to be upwards: I can see the NOTCH on the gib that has to be upwards. I suppose the notch on the gi must be facing the lever for it to make sense to be there? and the squared piece also has a notch and the notch here has to be downwards. if you have one or both parts the other way around the stitch may be shorter. Question: The arrows on the "Stitch length adjuster" are they supposed to be pointing upwards or downwards? ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: When I got the machine it was missing the "Thread Pressure plates" (on the Blue rectangle) so I borrow the one that the machine has for winding the bobbins, but in order to put the Thread Pressure plates in I had to pull out the pin (the one with the spring ) that holds the plates in place, once this was done the plates had No pressure, the only way to adjust them so the plates could apply pressure on the thread was to adjust the two nuts on the RED rectangle down. The reason I think this is relevant is because once I realized that the two nuts on the red rectangle where moved, I try to move them back and this in fact helped JUST A LITTLE, so the stitch is now better but not by much. I guess that the point I am trying to make is that there are other parts that affect the stitch length.
  8. Thank you guys, I certainly will check your suggestions starting with the gib notch, obviously I don't want to go purchasing parts if I don't need them but if I do I surely will replace the Bell crank lever, luckily I did got this beauty at a good price, so even if I have to spend some money to get it fix it is so worth it. Thanks a bunch! keep up the good work.
  9. Thanks a lot for ALL the great advise we get here. I just got a Singer patcher 29K58 and my issue is that I am not able to change the stitch length, I have moved down the piece in the back of the presser foot all the way down as indicated on the owners manual and the youtube videos but that doesn't change the length of the stitch. Is there any other setting that can help me change the length of the stitch? I thought that this one would be an easy one to fix but after adjusting the piece all the way down still does not work. As always, any advise will be appreciated.
  10. You guys rock! I thank you all for your input, that is what i needed. now I have more than one place where I can find stuff, Thank you all for your help on this one. A grateful newbie.
  11. Hi guys, I am getting in to leather working as a hobby. My father was a shoemaker back in the day and I used to work along him so I learn a few things, I would like to start making sandals (for me) and small stuff like little bags, etc to get my feet wet. My questions is where to buy "soles" for the sandals? it seems like leather is easier to get but I haven't seen anyone mentioned soles, am I the only one interested in making sandals? Although I am new to this now, way way back I learned to make leather shoes by hand with my father and I am counting on the fact that this is like the bicycle riding, once you learn it, never goes away! you may get a bit rusty but with a little practice everything will come back to me. I am still pretty good with my hands. I am in the Boston, MA area, but now days everything is purchased On Line so . . . Any advise will be greatly appreciated.
  12. Thanks for your reply, I think that you are right on the money, I was checking other forums and someone suggested the same thing and that I should try to forcibly get it to rotate, this guy has a Youtube channel and he knows this machines so I took his advice and ran with it,this is what I did: -Took the belt off and had someone else press the plunger while I was trying to get the wheel to move but no luck this way -Once the belt was off, i had more leverage to apply some brute force but nothing so I put a bunch of rags under the machine to catch the lubricant and applied lots of DW40 to see if that help and let it soak overnight -Next day, belt still off and with day light I noticed a hole in the balance wheel that I am trying to get loose, so I found me a long bolt just big enough to stick in in that whole and a rag to wrap the bolt, got me a leather glove to turn the bolt and I was able to get the wheel loose! It took me some researching and some imagination but I got it, I kind of figure that that was the issue because this machine is old, probably 1938 so the grease has been there for a while and most likely not in use so, do the math . . after this, I cleaned all the excess WD40 an oil and I am tinkering with it. I think is worth mentioning that this old Singer Machines have "Greasers" inside them so when people let them sitting around for years without use, the grease gets hard and becomes like glue or cement inside them. Hope this helps some other people looking for answers to this.
  13. Hi Guys, I hope someone can shed some light on this problem, I am trying to change the stitch length on my machine a Singer 245-3, this old machine is new to me and I am just trying to learn to use it, besides helping my mother and my grand mother with her machines when they got stuck, I have little to no experience with industrial machines but this one I couldn't pass the opportunity of getting it, so here I am stuck on trying to change the length of the stitch. Somehow I made the stitch very long and now I cannot change it back, seems like is stuck there. When I press down the plunger it drops down but the balance wheel does not move at all in any direction. See Pag 16 on the attached PDF manual Any takers? any help will be greatly appreciated!
