  1. Thanks for the replies, I use contact cement to hold my round and square patches but have request for odd shaped patches that there’s just not a good looking way to sew. There has to be a way as there are several companies doing it. The issue is figuring out how!
  2. Hey Guys, I am adding some leather patches to structured trucker style hats and Need some help on what to use to hold them to the hats. I will be sewing the patches after they are stuck to the hats but need them to hold while i manipulate the hat. There are some companies selling leather patch hats without sewing and supposedly they are holding up well. Would this be a type of heat applied adhesive?

  4. This is the style hats I will be making. The patches will be engraved and cut on laser and then sewn on.
  5. The “soul” patches are the look I’m going for. Are they bridle?
  6. I’m looking at making some leather patch hats but I’m not close enough to a leather store to put hands on leather and feel what I want. Anyone have suggestion as what to use? I will be engraving and cutting the leather on a laser machine and sewing them onto hats.
  7. Ahh, that makes complete sense. I appreciate your help.
  8. Thank you for that! I will be dip dyeing the leather. I have 8-9oz veg on hand and plan to use that. So light coat of neatsfoot before dying and then after to seal the dye?
  9. Thanks for the replies! I considered bridle but the price seems a bit high. I will look at latigo. I would love using veg and dying it but I suck at finishing it as it is always stiff as a board.
  10. I have been asked by a friend to make a few of these for his fire department buddies. They look simple enough but not sure which leather to use. I usually work with Traditional Harness but that’s a bit to fancy for this project. They will be hooked on a strap and used to carry radios by firemen so a strong leather is desired. I would appreciate any suggestions.
  11. @Matt S I am sewing 2-5 layers of 3-4oz Harness or bridle leather. I would like to be able to sew t270 thread.
  12. Come on guys, no one has any advice?
  13. Thanks for the advice, I’ll take a look.
  14. I am currently stitching all my wallets by hand because I like the way the thicker thread looks. I have a Consew 207rb5 that I use for any hidden stitches but it will not handle a large enough thread to replace hand sewing the visable areas. Being I am sewing wallets with 3-4oz Harness Leather it’s also crucial to have a feed dog that will not chew up the finished side of the leather. Any suggestions on alternatives to hand sewing that will give the same look with the larger thread?
  15. Are most Medium/Heavy duty needle plates and feed dog bolt patterns the same? Can I simply change the plate and feed dog to a design that would work better for leather?
  16. I have ground the feed dogs down a bit and the track marks have all but disappeared. The problem I continue to have is the dimple around each place the needle exits through the bottom piece of leather. Being I am sewing a wallet with finished sides out this ruins the back surface. Can I choose another needle plate with a smaller hole in it with a different configuration feed dog or am I stuck with the stock feed dog?
  17. I am using a 206rb-5. inhave backed the foot pressure adjustment out all the way until the last few threads. I have also lowered the feed dog a bit.
  18. Need a little assistance here. I am sewing leather wallets that have finished side out on front and back. When sewing the final pieces together I am getting dimples from the feed dog on the back side. Any ideas? 138 bonded nylon 135x17x22 sharp point needles
