  1. Is there something special about saddle skirting or can I substitute 8-10 oz veg-tan for Saddle skirting and back with either a 6 oz or thicker piece of leather. I want to make several tack items and really want to use some leather I have laying around. Thanks Adam
  2. Ill try using the skirting scraps to practice on, I guess it might not wear as well but Ill get some practice in before I drop a chunk of change on the sole bend.
  3. Tandy has there sole bends on sale for about $90 a bend for the economy grade. I really do not want to spend that much since I will probably only make a couple of sandals to see if I like making them. Is there a cheaper place to buy some sole bends? Thanks Adam
  4. So would 8-10oz for the top and backing with a thick latigo be good enough for any tack item or do I need a thicker top.
  5. I want to make some tack stuff for my sisters horses. What weight leather should I use to make Halters, Breast Collars and Bridles. Tandy has this on sale Light Weight Saddle Skirting. Will this be fine or do I need to get the normal Saddle Skirting.
  6. I was thinking in that direction I'm thinking I can wrap it in plastic to mold around it. When it dry remove the leather an the plastic wrap put the leather back and sew it together. Now I need to figure out how to do the edges. hmmmmm I have never done a turks head before would it be easy to do? Well maybe not easy but doable?
  7. I want to make a cover for my pipe so I do not put smudges on the meerschaum. Here is the pipe I own Any Ideas? I want to do this so the pipe ages well if I handle it to much then my fingers will make smudge marks and when It turns color it will be blotchy.
  8. Sorry it is kinda out of focus, but there is the mistake.
  9. I was sewing flaps on my bag last night when I noticed one of the flaps stitched I stitched in the gouge instead of the groove. Now I'm trying to make up my mind should I unstitch it and restitch in the right spot or just live with It? I'll post some pictures in a bit. So what do you think I should do?
  10. I am about to finish my dogs collar I just made and wanted to get some ideas on what finish to use on the collar. My grandfather always just used Tan Kote on belts, he didn't stain belts he just tooled and used Tan Kote. I do not plan on staining the collar because my dog is lets just say rambunctious. So I am planing on using Neats Foot oil, then a coat of Tan Kote. Any Suggestions Appreciated.
  11. Looks good what tool did you use to background around the horse heads on the right side. I thought I had gotten on from tandy but it looks completely different.
  12. I can not seem to find What, When and Wheres of trade shows for leathercraft. I live near Houston, is there any show that happens in or around Houston or surrounding cities. Thanks Adam
  13. I have this Cheap Airbrush Gun. I bought it to try out airbrushing and it works for the price. The only problem is when the air can get cold it quits working so for large projects it won't work. I assume this is the same for all air cans, I'm sure if you got a compressor you would no longer have a problem. I just got this to hopefully stop my antiquing bleeding and it works great.
  14. Thanks for the input, Tandy has a sale this month to buy all 3 Stohlman books for $33 which is a decent deal so I got them all. Now its just deciding what style to make this with? Do I want a zipper or just top flap? What style handle do I want to make. So many decisions so little time Right now I'm trying to decide if I want to try and make my own pattern to carve into the front or use one of the Stohlman patterns.
  15. Howdy, I am a programmer from Texas trying to pick-up where my grandfather left off with leather working. He was good and had a-lot of tools so I had a head start. I actually have USA made craft-tools they are far better quality then what craft-tool is now Hopefully Tandy cleans up their act and starts distributing a better quality tool. Well just thought I'd say hey.
  16. I have a 17in beast of a laptop that I want to make a case for. I was looking at buying the Al Stohlman "Art of making leather cases Vol 2". Will this be the right Vol or should I get one of the other two. Also do I really need this book, It looks simple enough to me. For the inside of the case I want to make is soft, would sheep's wool work well or will I be fishing wool out of my laptop? Any suggestions. Thanks I am going to use 8-10 oz cullatta on this, Does that sound about the right thickness? Adam
  17. That is exactly the style I am looking for I just didn't know the name for it. Thanks.
  18. Shucks, well if you can think of something different all the same. I just need good vine look. I'm still looking through craftaids and stuff.
  19. What I in vision is a bunch of vines entangled together kinda like the cross below. I just want a old school catholic church look to it. I plan on incorporating the design of the cross on the back cover. The front I want to say "HOLY BIBLE" and be able to put initials underneath it. I have been planing on making a donation just waiting on a paycheck. Kinda of like a sheridan design without the flowers. Thanks Adam
  20. First I am not an artist, so I need patterns. I want to make a good bible cover and am in need of a vine design. I have looked at what Tandy has and am not impressed. Does anybody no of a good design in a book I could get. Or can I pay someone to make me a design. Thanks Adam
  21. I have a bunch of old Veg Tanned leather. What are some characteristics of leather that is just too old to tool? I want to practice with this leather so I can save the new stuff for projects. Also how many times can you re-wet leather before the leather actually starts to degrade? Are there problems with wetting a piece of leather then letting dry then wetting it again? Should I just keep it in a air tight case to keep it moist? Thanks in advance Adam
