The 50/50 mix of Resolene worked like a reallywell. This is veg tan belly leather. It's very fibrous on flesh side. Thanks again... David
-
I'll try the 50/50 tonight. Package arived today.

I want to slick the flesh side of the leather. I made a couple more sheaths (inprogress). One is saddle tan and other chocolate Fiebings oil dye. Will resolene work as a slicking agent for the flesh side? I have a bottle of it coming in the mail at some point. I tried water on the belt loop after a little sanding. It's just ok but doesn't really look that great. Don't have a pic of that.

Really nice work on your skiving knife!

Thanks for the help...my leather cutting skills are...shall we say a little under par on tight inside corners. Using a utility knife for the moment. Was using a little 100 grit. Seems too rough on veg tan. I'll have to pick up some higher grit.
-
I see a lot of leather working videos where they sand the edges. What grit are you using? Thanks again, David

Canted sheath question/ help
DaveP replied to DaveP's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thank you FredK -
How do you make the belt loop on a pouch type sheath canted? I'd like to make this small sheath canted forward for wearing on left side. What would the pattern look like? Compared to this straight loop.
-
Here's the knives I've made for this sheath. Only have picture of three, but made four so far.
-
I did put a welt in it. If you look really close and blow up the size. You can barely see it.
-
Thank you Scootch! I'm in the process of making another one of these. I made 4 knives almost all the same size except the handles. What does everyone use on the inside of the sheath? I watched a bunch of YT videos. Seems Resolene or Tan Kote. Which would be better? I don't have either. I have dye now as it arrived yesterday. Fiebings Pro dye Chocolate and Saddle tan.

Thank you for your replies. Looked at the Barry King awls. Yes, they look nice. I searched all mentioned. I ended up ordering the Rocky Mountain awl. Others seemed out of my tool budget. If I need to hone it some I'm ok with that. Just ordered yesterday. Waiting and repost whenever it arrives. Thanks again, David

Which diamond stitching awl do you recommend?

Made this today. What do you think?

One more coat on the handle tomorrow and thinking it's just about done. Then sharpen it. Thanks everyone's help !

Advice needed for sheath
DaveP replied to DaveP's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
What do you mean? By cutting it out and put the pattern on? Does it look too deep into the sheath? My first sheath ever! -
Little sanding the handle scales. What do you think about the shape?

Drew this over...is this better ? I did receive and watch the Chuck Burrows DVD. Still not sure if I want a loop or sew a belt loop on. How would this be drawn for left side draw? Thanks -
Epoxy setting up.

After heat treatment. Then hand sanded awhile. Not as pristine as a Chartermade but I made it. Next will be glue up and handle finishing.
-
Did the heat treatment and a little hand sanding. Grey coating is an anti scale compound.

No...I used my belt grinder...small, tiny even... a 1"x30". It cut fairly easy as only the teeth of the bandsaw are really hard. Tomorrow it will go into my brick forge to harden then oil quench. Then in oven to temper...2 cycles of 400 degrees F. Pic is another knife in brick forge.

A little handle work.
