Unusual Hole Punch

Recommended Posts

A friend bought this hole punch years ago, probably in northern Nevada.  He said it has no name on it but it makes tiny holes through thin leather, he said almost as small as a needle hole.  I’m never seen one like it, has any else seen one of these or does anyone know anything about it?

I have one.  It might be good for watch strap holes but I don't make watch straps so I never use it.

Yup, I have two of them

Tandy sells them, or they used too

They cost about $25 from Tandy but I bought my last one for about £12

They're very useful for rapidly making holes in thin leather

I've got one, from Tandy.
Ditto what Fredk said -- rapid holes in thin leather. I've used it a few times just for that.

I find it most useful for punching the lacing/sewing holes when I make these little coin purses

Just one wee tip; keep that pointy cone sharp and true. Its quite easy to mis-align it with those holes in the circular plate and you can blunt the point. Every so often I give the point a swipe with a diamond sharpening plate

They are a dental dam punch. You can buy them at a lot of price points. Quick look found  Ebay sellers for new from $8-9. Quality professional grade can be over $100.

Fred is right about watching the tips. I get them in some sets I buy and usually throw them away because of bad tips.

They are a dental dam punch. . . .

Is this another example of a tool finding its way into different practices?

Sounds like it!   Lets hope certain other tools don't go the other way.  If a dentist came at me with a round knife I'm not sure if I'd run, or pass out before I could run!

I looked up 'dental dams'. They are not necessarily used by dentists!

Its a couple of months away to my next dental check-up and if I remember I'll take one of my pairs to my dentist to see what he makes of it. Just to find out
