What leather is this ?

Recommended Posts

I don't know much about leather types/names. I wonder what type  leather is mentioned in the images below and if possible, can you suggest a site where I can buy it? Have a nice day.

One type of leather tanning that repels water is "patent leather." This is expensive by the square foot,

Chrome tanned bag leathers also resist water, especially those that are oil tanned.

Then there is bridle leather for horse gear with waxes and oil embedded inside the leather and Latigo leather used in saddle strings and hanging straps. Latigo is also used in leather saddlebags.

Really, almost any type of leather can be finished with a water resistant top finish. The finish can be acrylic based or lacquer based. Saddle Lac is a well know leather protector. Even Carnauba Creme can waterproof leather if is is properly buffed.

Leather is waterproofed or hydrophobed to ensure water does not penetrate the surface. Leather specialists call it "hydrophobic leather" and end customers call it "waterproofed leather". Usually, shoe and clothing leather is already hydrophobed in the tannery to make it more weather-resistant.

Interesting that your profile says you are from Chicago, but your IP address is from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, 380001, India.  Are you a serious leather worker, or are you trolling?

@Civan Your pictures look like they came from Aliexpress (or similar), meaning the article can be made from pretty much anything. If the price is low, my bet would be on plastic-coated split leather. Something like this which I've bought by mistake (but at € 85) and hated at first (because at the time it eas not described as split leather, so I felt I had been had). Since then I've discovered that it's actually brilliant stuff for daily use in wet conditions. My dog collars and bags are still good, without any care whatsoever.
