carr52 Report post Posted January 25, 2023 Being an old guy I have trouble with my grip so I made myself a new maul. Haven’t tried it out yet. It weighs between 24 and 32 oz. I think. Haven’t put it on a scale yet. I used HDPE. Got a big 4” round piece online. Made the handle with black walnut on my wood lathe.

doubleh Report post Posted January 26, 2023 Another excellent from me. Seeing it's weight and being an old guy it would be quite a bit heavier than I would want to deal with. Even when a young guy I never used anything that heavy for leather work. I like to make tools too. Specialized knives, wood carving chisels, hammers, and so on. Some get wooden handles and some get knurled aluminum handles depending on size and use.

I find it’s easier for me to have a plan before I start turning or building a project. I still haven’t weighed it yet. Now I’m thinking it might only weigh about 16-18 oz. I just sorta compared it to a bag of gummy bears I “had”.
carr52 Report post Posted January 31, 2023 Well I weighed the maul today at the market. It comes in at just a couple grams over 16 oz.
DaveP Report post Posted February 3, 2023 Very nice! Did you recycle the HDPE? How hard is it compared to nylon or delrin?

I don’t use it for for large stamps. Like my makers mark. I use a 18 oz. dead blow hammer I got at harbor freight for those. No bounce with that. But it works great with the basket weave stamp
