Members CJJ Posted June 20, 2023 Members Report Posted June 20, 2023 I'd like to make sunglass straps like these but not sure what material to use for the grips. Their website refers to it as "high-stretch silicone". Does anyone have a recommendation for what I should use and where I might find it? Quote
Contributing Member fredk Posted June 20, 2023 Contributing Member Report Posted June 20, 2023 I wonder if these rubber pencil grips would work Quote
Members CJJ Posted June 22, 2023 Author Members Report Posted June 22, 2023 good idea on the surgical tubing. I found something that I think will work. Thanks! Quote
Members Wepster Posted June 22, 2023 Members Report Posted June 22, 2023 Please share with us what you found, and your experience with it. Surgical tubing sounds good to me, similar or the same, Slingshot bands, tube type obviously, but they tend to be that tan color. Quote

I'll update after it comes in and I have a chance to use it. Quote
Contributing Member fredk Posted June 23, 2023 Contributing Member Report Posted June 23, 2023 I fear that that rubber tubing will be far too stiff and solid for your needs Quote
Members doubleh Posted June 23, 2023 Members Report Posted June 23, 2023 Looks uncomfortable to me. Quote
Members Klara Posted June 24, 2023 Members Report Posted June 24, 2023 They sell straps for glasses that are entirely made from neoprene. I suppose you could sew/rivet a small tube of neoprene to your leather strap. You could get the neoprene (if you have no old diving suit etc.) by buying one commercial strap. Two tubes ready-made and material for several more. Quote

Members Bert03241 Posted June 24, 2023 Members Report Posted June 24, 2023 My fear would be putting a rivet thru any kind of rubber or silicone tubing will rip out in short order. I think wrapping several winds of a strong thread would work better. JMHO Quote
Members Wepster Posted June 24, 2023 Members Report Posted June 24, 2023 the wrapping is how slingshots are done, with bands or tubes. Quote
Members Wepster Posted June 25, 2023 Members Report Posted June 25, 2023 Found these looking for something else (of course), not the same, but same purpose https://www.amazon.com/Jdesun-Eyeglass-Adjustable-Connectors-Necklace/dp/B07SM679RR/ref=sr_1_122?keywords=cord%2Bends&qid=1687682617&s=arts-crafts&sr=1-122&th=1 Quote
Members CJJ Posted June 26, 2023 Author Members Report Posted June 26, 2023 Here's a finished one with the tubing I linked in the Amazon link. I think it looks pretty good for the application and so far seems like it will get the job done. I used double cap rivets to secure it. I'll see how it holds up over time. Quote
Members dikman Posted June 26, 2023 Members Report Posted June 26, 2023 It certainly looks ok, let us know how it works in practice. Quote

What is the width and thickness of your leather strap? Quote
Members GoldenLeatherCo Posted December 4, 2024 Members Report Posted December 4, 2024 I sell the silicone ends for these. I searched a long time to find these and thought this might help someone. https://goldenleatherco.com/products/silicone-end-attachment-for-leather-sunglass-straps-croakies-2-pc-set?_pos=3&_psq=sun&_ss=e&_v=1.0 Quote
