Help with material for sunglass strap

Recommended Posts

I'd like to make sunglass straps like these but not sure what material to use for the grips.  Their website refers to it as "high-stretch silicone".

Does anyone have a recommendation for what I should use and where I might find it?

I wonder if these rubber pencil grips would work

Please share with us what you found, and your experience with it. Surgical tubing sounds good to me, similar or the same, Slingshot bands, tube type obviously, but they tend to be that tan color.

I fear that that rubber tubing will be far too stiff and solid for your needs

Looks uncomfortable to me.

They sell straps for glasses that are entirely made from neoprene. I suppose you could sew/rivet a small tube of neoprene to your leather strap. You could get the neoprene (if you have no old diving suit etc.) by buying one commercial strap. Two tubes ready-made and material for several more.

My fear would be putting a rivet thru any kind of rubber or silicone tubing will rip out in short order. I think wrapping several winds of a strong thread would work better. JMHO:dunno:

the wrapping is how slingshots are done, with bands or tubes.

Here's a finished one with the tubing I linked in the Amazon link.  I think it looks pretty good for the application and so far seems like it will get the job done.  I used double cap rivets to secure it.  I'll see how it holds up over time.

What is the width and thickness of your leather strap?
