Todays iteration  working on Chucks idea kind of ( still can't find my Sam Brown buttons ) and without a real hair band .  I think this will most likely work with a real hair band except it will just loop over the rivet . If anybody else tries this ...... post it up , I ain't above coping a good idea :lol:

I wouldn't trust one of these rivets for the purpose (too short, too slippery). Sam Brown stud would be better (buy new ones, then the old ones will reappear). Or a button as mentioned by @chuck123wapati

I've actually used (new clean) ones for that. Not really hotdogs, but barbied sausages.
