Announcing Leatherworker.net's first ever carving contest (sort of)

The subject of this contest will be an oak leaf. You can use any pattern you like, your own, or anyone else's, and carve it anyway you desire. Coloring is optional, but if you choose to color it, we would like to have a picture of it uncolored as well.

You can enter the contest as many times as you like, as long as each entry is a different pattern, or carved in a different way. For example, one carved traditionally, and another carved inverted. For each entry, your name will be thrown into a hat for prize drawings, but you can only win one time (sorry, but that's the way it goes)

It's not going to be a competition where entries are judged against each other, but there will be prize drawings for the entrants. The reason it's going to be done this way is to encourage as many people as we can to participate, no matter your skill level. You don't have to feel intimidated in any way. By seeing how much participation we get in this contest, we can get a feel for how we should conduct future contests.

Send pictures or scans of your entries to contest entries.

Contest will close on December 21st, 2007. At that time, all the entries will be posted here on leatherworker.net for all to see. We hope you will all have fun with this.

Drawing for prizes will be held on or before December 30, 2007.

Prizes will be courtesy of Jim Linnell, Tandy Leather Factory.

Number of prizes will be determined by how many entries are recieved.

Any questions, comments or suggestions can be emailed to ClayB . If you have any complaints, take a number, have a seat, and help yourself to the doughnuts. Somebody might get back to you eventually.

Too cool! My compliments to Clay and all the people that came up with this idea. I hope lots of folks will play.

I am headed to the kitchen table to come up with a pattern, then to the bench to get started!

Sounds like a good idea. Will like to see all the different variations of carving. Any stipulation on the size of the oak leaf?

Any size, any pattern, any tooling style. This one is pretty open. We just want your participation and to see what you come up with.

Bump!

Got my layout almost finalized and will begin carving this afternoon. Who will tell, in the end, how many they carved/tooled vs what they submit. [lol]

Clay,

Do you want a before/after even if it is just one color dye & then antique?

Regis,

I would like pictures of all the entries without color so we can see the tooling. Another picture with color is optional.

Jordan,

All the doughnuts by the complaint box are sugar free, that's where I put the ones my dog licked the frosting off.

Clay, can the entry be a finished project?

Good idea by the way...good for the forum, and good for us!!

Rayban,

A finished project is fine. If you could though, could you try and get a close up of just one leaf from it too?

I am really glad that so many of you are showing an interest in this already. I am getting excited to see what you all come up with.

Clay, thanks for coordinating this contest and a special thanks to Jim for providing prizes. The idea of drawing for prizes is brilliant. :Lighten: I remember when we were discussing leatherwork competitions this past spring, the biggest sticking point was who would judge the entrants and how. What a great idea to reward contest participants with a prize drawing!

I'm looking forward to seeing the entries!

Best, -Alex

LOL, my wife's puppy drinks my coffee when I go looking for a doughnut so I guess having the frosting licked off is par for the course.

But, will there be judging even if not against each other? For example n points for design & complexity, nn points for carving, and nnn points for tooling. That would give everyone an idea of areas needing most work or practice.

Just a thought (unless you get 200 entries of course)[lol]

Regis,

At this point there are no plans to judge the entries at all. You could request a critique on your entry if you like. Hopefully if we get a bunch of requests, we could get a few people to work on critiques.

Just wanted to remind everyone that is thinking about submitting an oak leaf (or two or three), you only have until the end of the week to get pictures sent in. I am really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with. I hope we are buried in last minute submissions.

I don't now you maybe flooded with entries but after reading your last comment "buried in last minute submissions". I get the feeling NOT. You might want to rethink the deadline here. I keep thinking i'll find the time to do atleast one. But, , , with trying to get a few things made for x-mas and then all the shopping,,,well . . I would bet i'm not the only one who is tight on time this time of year. Or maybe have this one and then do another after the new year. I think all in all it's a great idea. I just think the timing might be off.

I am considering extending the deadline, but haven't made a decision yet. I am not sure I think that would be fair to the people that "made" the time to get thier entries done by the deadline. I know it was bad timing with it being this close to Christmas, but I felt it had been put off long enough. Hopefully the next one will go more smoothly.

I hope you extend the deadline.

I've been SO busy with Christmas gifts, & orders.

Also beleive or not I just found out about the contest.

I think its a great idea. I'm on the site every day, but only found out by seeing the oak leaves Jim sent you.

Anyway, if not I'll enter the next one. Hope there is a next one.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL...

Well... I submitted two entries, but shoot this is for fun, not for the prizes. I have no problem with keeping it open if it gets more folks in - honestly, my only reason for wanting it closed would be to see what everybody did!

I enjoyed it and want to encourage participation, so Clay, whatever you think makes it a sucessful contest, I support.

That's kind of something I've thought too. I think it would be a good idea to have something like a temporary note at the top of the forum homepage for stuff like this because I think it would get noticed by more people. That way everyone knows right away if a contest has begun.

And you know, I was just going to ask what the exact deadline is because I think I can get an entry in before the end of tomarrow (the 21st). . . Yeah, I really should have done it sooner, but. . . See, that's the thing about this forum! There are so many topics and interesting things here that I don't always get through looking at everything I'd like to! So I'm pretty sure I didn't find out about the contest right away either. Now why did Johanna have to start such a great place?! :scratchhead: ;)

Ok, I guess I have decided to extend the contest deadline until December 30. That gives everyone 2 more weekends (and one of them is after Christmas) to carve thier oak leaves. Hope that helps.

Clay,

I wouldn't sweat the deadline issue, I am sure that this is the first of many "contests".

I think it's a fantastic idea! Competition drives people to better themselves and try things they normally wouldn't have. In the future you could have different subjects like another leaf, a certain animal or flower... For some contests you might like a people's choice vote or having a member donate a prize. Anyway you do it I am sure it will get people off the couch and into the shop (or kitchen). I like the idea of Shorter deadlines (less then a month) because it forces me to make time and "get er done" =) I can't wait to see the entries... Thanks again Clay!

Clay,

This deadline issue is not so important but, by the same token, some will find reason to miss the next one and some will miss every deadline. Why not ask how many will "commit" to an entry if you delay 15 or 30 days? For future ones, I like Scouter's idea of shorter deadlines (when the subject is reletively simple). Then, you either jump in and patrticipate, or not.

I tooled mine on odd shaped scraps of leather. And after reading some of the discussion here and other posts, I think I should have at least faded out to some type edge or frame or toward some end product. I think this is great experience especially for those of us that have never submitted work into any guild or show.

Competition grows every participant's skill and knowledge (even the big kids). And, this was a good way to start the ball rolling reguardless of the particular deadline or prizes. I looked forward to seeing the various designs and tooling as well as how mine compared (on the same subject).

Well sent one, but do not know if it made it through. With the longer time line will try to get another one done.
