Free Line Drawing: The War Pig

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.

Couple purposes in posting this one so didn't know which thread to post in.

  1. Latest design, tooling complete.  This one will be a green notebook cover.  Hope you like it.
  2. Always looking for criticism / ways to improve.  Thick skin so please don't hold back.  You're not doing me any favors if you do.
  3. Feel free to use the line drawing if you like it.  Happy to share.
  4. Is there a thread to post line drawings/templates for use by this community?  I poked around but didn't see a thread.

@RidgebackCustoms

I have a couple of comments. And I am in no way able to make something like that myself since drawing is not my strongest suit, but you asked for comments so here they come :-)

To me it initially looked like an angry Santa Claus merged with an orc.  (Sorry about that)

I think the beret is a trifle too long, or it should fold nearer to the insignia mark over the left eye. I guess there are different models of berets, so it could also be that your model beret is longer than a Danish one. Normally when I see them on personnel, the tip ends sort of just under eye level. The long tip is what made me think of Santa Claus.

The tusks are spread out too much, and the aft tusks are somehow too visible. I think that is why I initially thought of an orc instead of a wild boar. On your drawing it looks as though the main tusks are set in the upper part of the mouth, and that looks kind of strange when they are in the lower jaw on a wild boar. I would suggest leaving out the aft tusks all together since they very much contribute to the orc look.

The beard/hair looks nice, with good flowing lines.

The eyes and the wrinkles around them including the scars also look good.

LOL!  Points for originality and fair call.  Maybe I should rebrand it.

Fair.  The standard beret is much shorter and this one would be out of regs in America.  But the style for young, indestructible paratroopers was to stretch them out as much as possible and wear it as low as possible.

Fair call.  I was thinking the same during tooling as they blend the upper face with the lower part of the drawing and make the area with the beret, fore tusk and aft tusk on the left side of the drawing very busy and difficult to tool.

I am so glad that you aren't mad at me. :-)

The beret thing is interesting, I never knew that there were different "fashions" in how to wear them. So if whomever receives the notebook immediately can identify the war pig as a paratrooper - well then it should definitely outweigh that it might be a bit out of regulations :-)

But I forgot to mention that the tooling looks really good to me. I especially like the shadow effect that you get from giving a bit more depth to the border on the right side of the tooling compared to the left side. It sort of gives a bit more depth in the tooling that both sides are not to the exact same depth (if that makes sense)

I'm used to a much shorter beret, as worn in the RAF. The length of your reminds me of French Special Forces ones

War pig? more like a Warthog;  geddit?

I don't think you need to worry that your boar looks like an orc.  All boars will look like orcs because orcs are conceived as looking like boars, just as werewolves are conceived as looking like wolves and the Monkey King is conceived as looking like a monkey.  Not your problem.  Keep the tusks, they're awesome.

Yes, shorten the beret, because the way it sags looks lax and detracts from the energetic impression you want to make.  As @fredk suggests, you may want to go for the RAF look, or for whatever branch of whatever service is dear to you.

Re the beard -- the beard itself is not the problem.  In fact you need it, along with the hair,  in order to frame and emphasize the face.  The problem is that it looks soft and slightly wavy, which detracts from the sense of ferocity (unless you want to make it even wavier and go for the appearance of flames) and it droops too much.  I'd suggest making the tufts of hair/beard short and bristly, radiating outward more,  rather than hanging downward, with more layers if necessary to make up for the shortness.

It's already pretty effective., especially if you are doing it as a caricature for a specific person who has similar hair and beard.  You've got skills and an eye for drama.  If it were me I'd have never gotten the brow and eyes so good.  Well done.  I'd just suggest these tweaks.

Any suggestions for hair / texturing guidance?  I've seen some stuff from Weaver, youtube videos, etc.  But looking for any resources you may have.

Use a 'hair' tool. It usually has two ends; a fine and a coarse, use the coarse end

I have the cheaper Tandy version and it works terribly well

Here is my version. (Not my drawing.) Arkansas Hogs variant. I like yours a lot!! You did a great job on the tooling.

UPDATE:

Made some changes to the line drawing.  Haven't gotten around to re-tooling though.

Shortened the beret up on both versions.  Dropped from 4 tusks to 2 on one of them.  Personally I like the 4 tusk version still, but like the shorter beret.
