Glazing is usually an intentional process done to seal the leather... Alot of exotics are glazed.

More likely is that at some point that leather was placed on a surface that had something on it that transfered to the leather and acted similar to a glaze or sealer.

Yeah this particular side of veg-tan leather the wallet back was cut from, had 1 area that was really shiny, almost reflective so to speak.  

So maybe at some point is was laid on something that caused it.

I still think you had something on your hands. You were eating chips, applying ointment or something. It's inside the panel but outside the carving. No way a random drip/spill/smear was that precise on both sides.

Or, maybe something on the tool you backgrounded with.

Amazing Work? Your swivel knife work is crisp and clean and concise. Your friend got a very nice looking wallet and I bet he was very pleased with it! You really did a great job tooling the bass and the lettering turned out great as well and the added touch of the center geometric stamping tied it all together. I hope to keep practicing and Getting better with my S.K.. just shipped the wallet I finished for my father in law and I’m excited to see what he thinks about it when he receives it in a few days. He’s always making awesome knives and gifting them to me so it made me happy to do something in return handmade for him. I enjoy leather working for many reasons but really enjoy it for the simple fact that each piece is different and a lot of thought and care goes into finishing something and making sure it looks as good as it can when it’s all said and done. Again , Great work you did a very nice job !!!

Thanks. I appreciate your kind words. Yeah I dabble a bit in knife making too. 

Yeah my buddy has been showing that wallet to everybody he meets. I think he is tickled with it. 

Yeah my swivel knife work needs some more practice thou. 

I also know you really need to have multiple variations & types of swivel knife blades. Lol or at least I do.

I got tired of swapping blades so I bought multiple different swivel knives to find a knife that fits me well.

If you don’t mind me asking what knives do you enjoy using the most? I run a craftool pro 1/2 barrel with a Barry king 1/4” thin blade and I really enjoy that set up. I haven’t used a 3/8 barrel knife yet the cheap swivel knife I got with leather work kit was also 1/2 barrel so I’m wondering if it’s a big difference in feel for cutting tighter corners or if it makes much difference at all. Keep up the good work!!!!!

Yes I can. The black swivel knife is a Owden with a 3/8hollow ground blade. I cut most of my straight lines with it. 

The Copper colored swivel knife is a ZhongJiang with a 1/4" hollow ground blade in it. I do most of my cutting with this knife. 

The Silver swivel knife is a Crafttool with a 1/4" angled ZhongJiang blade. I do my fine detail work with it.

I had a wonky piece of leather I believe & there was a few spots that would not take dye very good. 

But after dying & antiquing it, I like the effect or results of it. 

Lmao I will just tell my friend that his wallet is wonky like him. 

Awesome job DT. My thoughts on tooling flowers and scrolls are well known but I do like tooling to highlight practical projects. I don't have the skill to do it myself, maybe some time in the future. I will say I'm not a fan of the over use of antiquing. I think it robs the piece of the beautiful darkening and patina that comes naturally with age. Hard hat firmly in place.

Lol I'm not sure what to look for or how it happens. 

It's not splotchiness, it's "character".
