pepin1948 Report post Posted February 19, 2007 The brother in law of the "make me a gun rig for a low cost" fame has now talked me into making him a pair of cowboy cuffs...well this was easier to convince me on because it's a smaller project and he has a birthday coming up - so they'll be a gift. I'm taking the advice of our local Tandy Manager and learning to buckstitch so I can do a decorative stitch at the top edge, with a silver lace. The spade will be edged in silver and inside it will be black. The leather will be stained mahogany.

MatthewD Report post Posted February 19, 2007 Very nice work.. just wondering but how did you do the texture in the middle of the spade?
pepin1948 Report post Posted February 19, 2007 I used 2 different backgrounders: A118 for the center and A100 for the bottom/tip. I'm planning to cut the strap for the bottom slits and to dye it mahogany today.

pepin1948 Report post Posted February 23, 2007 Thanks for the comments He loves 'em so far - I sent him these pics. I did stain the pieces, which came out really well. Am on vacation right now, but will be doing the coloring when I get back, then the decorative stitching. Will send along more pics shortly...
pepin1948 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 (edited) Here's the "paint job" - pretty basic, just a wash of black and silver acrylics - but it adds a nice highlight to the piece. Next it's on to the stitching... Edited February 25, 2007 by wildrose

pepin1948 Report post Posted March 2, 2007 Here is the finished product, with my husband lending his arm to the modeling ... I never did get a good clear pic of the buckstitching, but it was good advice from Jeff, manager of our new Tandy, to do that instead of rivets for decoration. And it was something new for me to learn to do. I found out buckstitching is not as easy as it looks. He also sold me the Stohlman book on it, which wasn't hard since it also has some great designs in it, and I'm a sucker for new things to carve. I also learned I ought to have been more careful to get the stain down into the slots where the buckle strap weaves in and out. I didn't notice this problem 'til I put the strap through. I'll try to fix that before I ship it...
