If I dye a holster that has to be sewn before wet molding, will the dye stain my lighter colored thread? If so is there a yaw to prevent this from happening?  I normally seal my leather a couple coats before sewing to limit this issue. I'm not sure how to proceed to make a wet form type.  Thanks

FEIW, I haven't had bonded nylon take stain. I think you're going to have to experiment with your specific thread.

All thread I've ever used will pick up the dye . . . cotton and linen are the worst culprits for this.

If you want it to be pristine . . . as some of my orders are . . . put it together . . . dye it . . . rub it out real good . . . sew it . . . then wet mold it . . . works great.

OR . . . dye your leather first . . . cut out the pieces . . . sew it . . . wet mold it . . . that's the simplest way to get light colored thread to be really nice .

May God bless,

Dwight

If you're talking about handstitching then make the thread a lot longer than is needed, as you pull the thread through the first foot or so will rub the dye out of the hole.

Well in that case. Punch the holes after you dye. Fiebing Pro is bad about getting on the thread. Especially if you've dyed after punching the holes. Leaving globs of dye that get on the thread.

It's not bad with the alcohol based. But still. I punch my holes after it's dyed. When you pound or roll the stitch line. It'll snug up the holes around the thread. You won't see anything except clean thread.

I've dyed allot (thousands) of holsters black after they're sewn.  Assuming you use black thread, it's not a problem.  Use the Pro Feibing's dye.  I hate the cheaper stuff, it dries the leather more and leaves more residue to buff off when it dries out.

I do the same with dark brown blends on black thread.   I always use poly on the things I dip dye.

If it's lighter shade you're after you need to dye your work first.

Or use a sewing awl instead of pre-punching holes that take up excess dye.
