I would like to sew veg tan 5-6 oz to a hair on hide cowhide to create a stool top. I have researched several machines and looked for machines with a walking foot. Today, someone suggested getting a Singer model 66 or 99 to do the job. They said these models would have no problem sewing this., even without the walking foot, and that I would save a lot of money. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The Singer 66 and 99 are domestic sewing machines. I wouldn't waste my time or money on trying to sew the veg tan to a hair on cowhide.

What size of thread are you planning on using and how thick in total (veg tan plus the hair on cowhide) be??

I moved your post to leather sewing machines.

If you haven't looked at this thread, you really should.

If you're only going to be sewing things occasionally then hand stitching might be the way to go but if you definitely want a machine then don't mess around and look for a walking foot, DO NOT buy a domestic machine and expect it to sew leather (regardless if someone says it's a "heavy duty/semi-industrial" machine). The deciding factor is the total thickness you want to sew.

Machines wot I have - Singer 51W59; Singer 331K4; Seiko STH-8BLD; Pfaff 335; CB4500.
