wizard of tragacanth Posted December 4, 2025 Report Posted December 4, 2025 Looking for quality 12 to 14 oz belt blanks e.g. Herman Oak or similar from U.S. supplier. Minimum length of 55", Nick Quote Wisdom from an old Missouri farmer, my Grandpa: If it's not sharp, it's not a knife.
Members Dwight Posted December 4, 2025 Members Report Posted December 4, 2025 It ain't HO . . . but I've never had much more than a small quibble about the sides I've purchased thru Tandy. Granted . . . I don't order them on line . . . I go in . . . start pulling and inspecting sides with my dial caliper and my two good eyes. It has taken a good half hour in the past . . . but that side of leather I walk out with tucked under my arm . . . it does the job and then some. May God bless, Dwight Quote If you can breathe, . . . thank God. If you can read, . . . thank a teacher. If you are reading this in English, . . . thank a veteran. www.dwightsgunleather.com

wizard of tragacanth Posted December 4, 2025 Author Report Posted December 4, 2025 I don't want to buy a side because I only want to make this one belt, for myself. I am about at the end of my leather "career" and do not want to stockpile any leather. I have a Tandy handy and could layer two of their blanks but I do not have a sewing machine. I said HO because if I am ordering sight-unseen. I want good leather and HO takes some guess-work out of the equation. Thanks guys. Members thewesternsaddler Posted Thursday at 09:31 AM Members Report Posted Thursday at 09:31 AM Hi Nick, Quality 12–14 oz belt blanks are a great choice for durable belts — that weight hits the sweet spot between strength and flexibility for everyday carry. Herman Oak is definitely one of the go-to options, but there are a few other U.S. vendors and leathers worth considering: • Wicket & Craig — similar veg-tanned weight, excellent for belts and heavy leather projects. • Schneider’s Veg-Tan — reliable 12–14 oz veg tan with consistent thickness and great tooling surface. • Tandy’s 12–14 oz veg tan can work well for belts if you’re okay with a slightly softer feel to start with. A quick tip when sourcing blanks is to check whether the hide is from the shoulder/neck area versus the belly — shoulder cuts tend to be tighter and stronger, which is ideal for belts. Also, getting them from U.S. suppliers usually keeps out nasty shipping surprises and supports faster restocking if you work through blanks regularly. What will you be using the belts for (E-DC, western carry, dress)? That can help fine-tune the leather choice. Quote
wizard of tragacanth Posted Friday at 02:25 AM Author Report Posted Friday at 02:25 AM Thanks for the suggestions. This belt will be used for daily concealed carry. Quote Wisdom from an old Missouri farmer, my Grandpa: If it's not sharp, it's not a knife.

Thanks in advance. Jim Quote
