Ian Report post Posted April 15, 2009 (edited) Finished this set today - nothing too special, but I'm glad all the braiding is done. 87 inches total of braid. This week I had two seats, three tank panels, a p-pad and a knife sheath - all with braided edges. I need a break from braiding. Only one of next week's projects is braided, so far. It will be like a vacation. And, on the topic of lacing/braiding; is there a Murphy's law someplace that says "no matter what length you cut your lace, you will always be about an inch short"? I swear, it happens every single time. Edited April 15, 2009 by Ian

Also, this is 2/3oz upholstery leather, and when I've punched holes before, the foam underneath tends to show through, looking kind of unsightly. Ahhhhhh, I've been using the 45* 4 prong chisel and pulling through 8-9 ounce major pita LOL Bought a small spring loaded pair of pliers just to help in this one task. Again, looks great
Suze Report post Posted April 15, 2009 simple is where a master crafter shines my friend. you can hide goof ups and flubs in an intricate design - where there is no design to hide it in you MUST do the best work possiable. this is shining quite well (I read a story once about a lady buying silverware for her table and asking why the plain set cost more than the fancy-dancy one. and that was the answer she was given)
David Report post Posted April 16, 2009 I've always been afraid of slits instead of holes .... there will be much more stress on the ends of the slits .... and the lace could act like a little saw to cause them to tear through.... Just a thought .... although an unhappy one. I do however understand what you mean about the padding showing through .... The type of seat I build doesn't have padding under the lace so I don't encounter that issue. Terrific looking work Ian. Very nice. pilotmill Report post Posted April 19, 2009 nice seat, I love the use of the pattern and braid, looks simple but we all know better, thats what makes it special, the look is clean and simple but a closer look reveals the true custom work. Nicely done.
Razz Report post Posted April 20, 2009 Very pleasing to the eye. I have yet to do much lacing, but want to learn, what would be the best book. I am more of a visual guy, the long written technical explanations are not for me. Unlike what some other peoples say, I do look more at the pictures than read the articles.
