very first project (saddle)

This is my very first project, in all aspects of leather work. Open to all input on how to make the next one better. Horn still needs to be wraped with mule hide, but waiting for a warmer day so I can lay my tracks in it.

My Goodness Al,

For a first project, you did great!! If you set it out in the sun for an hour or so, it may help with some of the un-even oil marks. Keep an eye on it though, the sun will make it darker, if you leave it out too long.

Thanks for the pointer. I will keep it in mind for the next one, this being mine & wanting something totally mine I opted for the light & dark look. Not likely something any one else would want but I like.

Yet again I am going to say WOW, I must be really behind the curve learning wise, because all of you guy's and gal's first saddles look a heck of a lot better than mine does

Turned out good. I'm wondering what you lined the skirts with, it doesn't look like sheepskin. It looks like maybe you used splits over foam? or is it just the photo? Chris

Haha! Go big or go home for sure!! I bought a custom tree for my kids and their pony two years ago and just finally got the gumption to start it in August. Mostly I was afraid of messing it up and making the world's ugliest saddle. You have to start somewhere...and I guess you really went for it!! Good job, I'm certain I wouldn't have done that well 10 years ago when I started in the craft. I think the research I've done has taken up a good part of the last two years!! :0) I can see the light at the end of the tunnel...just wish I had more hours in a day to devote to the saddle.

I have to agree, for a first project you really aimed high. Obviously, we can see a big distinction between your work and that of the experienced saddle makers, but I still have to say, WOW. That is one of the most respectable "first projects" I've ever seen. Rock on!!!
