  1. Does your transporter come down to the Ocala, FL area often? I am interested but would have to put a few pennies together
  2. SHOP CLOSING - A colleague is selling his equipment. His assessment puts the used equipment value around $250K but Dr. says he has to simplify and he has two other businesses (and we all know the leather business is involved!) - so he's looking to sell ALL for $60K. (He is not ready to break it up) All is located in Central Florida. I tried to attach a pdf but it was too big and couldn't get it reduced. A little hard to look at in list form like this but you can email me for a pdf copy > barcsaddlery@yahoo.com The list is not complete. He has a few more pieces of equipment to catalog and a lot of raw materials. If you're interested, please contact me and I can get photos and help him complete the inventory report. 4. I'm assuming with the age of the ad and the moving situation that this press is already sold - but I thought I'd ask just in case!! Is it available? Thanks!
  5. Thanks Tom, I appreciate it. My biggest concern was the motor and if I should be looking for anything special but I figured if one of our sewing machine dealers saw the thread they might be able to answer both. I actually got brave, dug in and fixed the thread adjusting button ~ It was just rusted in place which is interesting since the machine has very little rust anywhere else. Guess I will call around about the motors Monday
  6. Looking for a servo motor (new or used good condition) for my Juki LU 562
  7. Hi All! Wondering if anyone can tell me what I need to look for in a servo motor for my Juki LU 562 Industrial Machine. With clutch it is way too fast for the precision work I'd like to do with it (or I'm just too slow!) I'm finding some motors for anywhere from $99 up to $150 on ebay but not sure if there is anyone who can tell me if there are special specifications I need to look for. Also, the stitch length adjusting button is stuck down in the machine ...husband says it looks like it is wearing out the cam from being stuck (have only tested it on a few pieces since I bought it). Husband is a machinist so we can probably make a new cam if they are hard to find but can anyone recommend a Juki parts dealer that could possibly walk me through fixing this? Thanks! Natalie
  8. Thank you --- No bound thread etc... nothing obviously bent so far, but will re-evaluate!
  9. Hi Everyone!! It has been a super long time since I've been here, I miss it ;o) I just bought a Juki LU-562 machine from an older gentleman who had never sewn on it. This man bought it to learn and decided he liked his Boss well enough, most likely because it is not equipped with a servo motor. I definitely plan to change to a servo as soon as possible but I have a few other issues that need ironing out. * The button to press for stitch adjustment is rusted in place and my stitch length stays the same but the stitch length dial spins freely while sewing. ___ I've been soaking it with WD-40 and ate up a lot of the rust but it is stuck in the down position and not sure the best method to try to tap it out, would have to be from the bottom somehow. * There is a spot in the rotation of the machine where, if using the hand wheel without the belt attached to the motor, you can feel a lot of resistance. I believe it is when the needle bar is going into, through, and coming out of the highest position. ___ I don't think that should be normal but maybe I'm wrong?? * Will a servo fit the machine and is it hard to switch? (I have already emailed Ferdco to see if they have any left ) * I have read posts that say if you are good with a clutch you can operate one of these fast machines more slowly... Is that true? As of now, my pedal has to be depressed almost all they way down to start the machine (and then it goes FAST), if I tighten up the mechanism, should I have more control over the speed? Thanks in Advance!! Natalie
  10. You all are just awesome! It's so great to find such helpful fellow crafters and Mike, a special thanks to you for sharing your outlines! )
  11. So.... I'm getting the feeling this is just "part of the job" I suppose I could use it as an excuse to buy a nicer swivel and/or just take breaks and do my stretches! I do try to remember to do my anti-carpal-tunnel stretches daily and when I cramp, I seem to remember a little more readily!! Thank you for the advice, still open to any magical solutions.
  12. I've read up on some old posts about swivel knives and cramping. There wasn't much to be found, although I did find a post about setting the height. I've been in leather craft for about 13 years now but the business itself is fairly young and just moving out of the "part time" classification. Thank goodness I took Bob Park's advice and got some proper sharpening stones and that has helped me out tremendously! I'm still having problems with cramping in my hand with my swivel knife cutting. I use a filigree blade (recently moved to a fatter 1/2" barrel) for most of my floral/ tight curve carving. My standard swivel blade is on a smaller barrel and I use it for straight cut borders and decorative cuts. I've tried making the knives taller, shorter, switching the blade to the bigger & thinner barrels to no avail. I thought maybe having the blade properly sharpened would help but doesn't seem to. I don't have small hands, I would say average. My cramp is NOT in my index finger as I read some people's cramps occur. My cramping occurs in the 'meaty' base of my thumb. That muscle at the base of my palm. My question is... could I be using pressure at the wrong places? I've looked at many pictures of people holding their swivel knives and I don't see any major differences in how I hold mine so I'm thinking I'm just squeezing the barrel too hard??? I can't seem to do it any different. ANY advice is greatly appreciated Thanks, Natalie Carroll Bar C Saddlery
  13. I'd say you're off to a great start!! Don't worry... after a few years of leather working your hands will be dry and rough and calloused (and probably off colored from dyes)!!! Ha Ha! It's always when I'm headed to the shop that I think of the slathering of lotion my hands need ... and then I don't want to do it because I don't want to get it on my leather. You could buy gloves and modify them, cutting off all but the pinkies or you could just get medical tape and wrap them. The gloves were awkward for me and bandaids just don't stay put. You're in great company and I wish I'd have known about this forum (if it existed) when I first started. It will greatly improve your learning curve.
  14. Muchas Gracias!!! Thank You!! Merci!!! Very helpful. Not far off from what I had been doing recently with a few minor exceptions that might just do the trick!!! Gotta love Rachael and her EVOO ;o) I've tried it before but don't use it regularly... have been contemplating replacing all my shop oil with it when I run out, I might just do that.
  15. Hey Bobby... Of course, at risk of a little redundancy I'll say; awesome work! Would you mind sharing your antique methods with us? I've tried a few different methods and I'm not sure if I'm not applying enough oil or neat lac/ super sheen etc. but I always tend to get a little darker effect than I'd like and sometimes too much "character" if you will. I think the 'character may have been partially due to the fact I wasn't using the highest quality leather (just got my first large order of WC today after trying my first side of HO...excited to try it out!) I want to barely be able to tell there's added color, leaving only a light brown look and of course I know that antiquing really accents the tooling. Basically I want mine to look like yours!! HA HA. Of course I've got work on the actual tooling but until I can reach that caliber, at least I'd like the antique to look good! Thank you for your guidance, you are clearly a mentor and an idol to many here!! It's awesome that artists like yourself are willing to share some of your secrets. EDIT!! ~~ Okay... did some research and found some info on old posts. I see that you recommend cleaning with oxalic acid. I've got some and have used it but could you tell what dilution you use? I've read one teaspoon per cup of water but not sure where I read that!! What kind of gloves do you use for that, I've had it eat through a kitchen glove but I suppose I could have been rubbing too hard with an old glove??? I also see that you possibly oil before sealing with resist/sealant. What oil do you prefer? Is there a magic number of coats? I have been doing one light coat but how do I know what is too light? Does it make a huge difference? I also see that you use Fiebings Paste and that all of your applications for sealant and paste are wool scrap as well as paste removal and buffing, got that part down! Again...THANK YOU!
  16. Wow... I think I'm rethinking the head knife on my "wish list"... looks like it might just be one of these now!!!
  17. I don't feel that I posted anything that could have been read as untruthful or libel. I laid out the facts. I'm pretty easy to please and this fire could have been smoldered by a phone call, an email or anything. I was somewhat happy to see the apology, until I saw that Steven then was pulling his advertising here. My apologies to the site for that but I made sure before hand that the other members wanted to know and that I wouldn't be frowned upon for sharing. I know as well as anyone that sometimes things just go wrong. All I wanted was a little personal attention and a personal apology, not one that was simply for public damage control. I only shared because if there was a supplier out there that had such terrible customer service, I would know to enter business with caution. If it wasn't clear in my first post, I did receive my refund finally. Steve, if you feel any of this is not the full truth than that would be between you and your staff, because I never did get to speak with you or hear from you in any way. I can prove via phone records that nobody ever contacted me and if I had to, I could get the times and dates of all those phone calls I made. As I said before, I'm pretty easy to please and a genuine, heartfelt apology would have been an easy fix. I was as nice as I could possibly be each call I made until the call last Thursday when I had reached my limit and even then there was no yelling or cursing or negativity... just straightforward about my frustration. Several times I considered calling or writing a letter to let Steve know what was happening because if it were my company, I'd surely want to know. That was until I was waiting on hold to speak to him and he 'LEFT' without answering my call. It was then my opinion that he did not care. It is now clear that I'm not the only one who had customer service problems. My prayers are with you Steve that you can find a way to fix your problems. Good luck to you.
  18. The supplier that I had so much trouble with is Siegel of California On November 17th I placed an online order for some work chap sides and I requested a color from their color swatches. The color swatches were in color groups and numbered. I chose green palette color #4. Normally I wouldn't make a special color request like that online but it was an 'online only' special. The package took longer than I expected to get here but I let that go because I figure that those things sometimes happen. When I got the package it was not even close to the shad of green that I requested. Their website states that they accept returns for any reason and will even pay return shipping. When I called to return it the lady I spoke with was not very friendly... rather the opposite; but I wrote that off to the lady having a bad day. She told me the swatches were wrong, that the website hadn't been updated and that the boss had not written my special color request on the order anyway. She told me she was arranging the return so I waited a few days thinking that they were sending the carrier to pick it up. Around 4 days and no pick up. I called back and they explained that they were sending a tag, not a pick up. So, I waited about another week and still no tag. I called back ...oops, they informed me that they never mailed the tag and promised to get it to me right away. Finally got the tag sometime around Dec 13th or 14th and shipped the box on Dec. 15th from our local pack-n-ship. I lost count (really should have been keeping notes at this point) of the calls I made but called several times to find out if they had received the box. The first time they said they had not received it yet and I got worried as it was now after Christmas. I gave it a few days and called back. I was told they would look into it that there were returns in the warehouse that needed to be checked in, they would call me to let me know. I did not receive a call back. I called back when I hadn't heard from them and was told they would track the package. In January I finally get to talk to someone who actually followed through on tracking the package to find they had received it but that it was still awaiting the 'boss' to approve the return. Again I called back and was told the boss would be notified again that I was awaiting my refund. No call back. I called again to find out that the 'boss' claims I have more than one account and he needs to look into it..delay...delay... no calls back, no respect. At this point it was a daily call ... the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Thursday Feb 10th I called and asked to speak to Steve ... aka the boss. I was told he'd be in the office in an hour. I set my timer and called in exactly an hour. He was on the phone and I chose to hold. When the line picked up it was the clerk again and said he left!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? At this point I lost my marbles. I kindly let the lady know that I had family and friends in California and if Steve needed to see someone face to face to have a conversation, that I could send someone down there, no problem. I also told her that I was considering sharing this incident with all of my colleagues. The lady assured me he was planning on calling me Friday morning. Friday afternoon; STILL NO CALL. I called again and she told me that he had refunded my money and I informed her that I was extremely disappointed and that if it wasn't already crystal clear, I would NEVER do business with them again. I am a patient and forgiving person and my husband claims I let people walk all over me, but even I have to draw the line. My biggest disappointment was that nobody .. not once, not one person EVER called me. All calls were from me to them and although the lady I dealt with from January on was kind to me, it took numerous daily calls to get results. I feel that if mine was a crazy case that just went all to heck wrong, I should have been given a courtesy call from Steve. Unfortunately the feeling I get is that the business just isn't organized and I don't get the feeling that the customer comes first. I feel that I should not have been avoided and that no matter what the case, I should have been given respect. Now, if anyone is still awake... you know what happened!!
  19. I have recently had an EXTREMELY bad experience with a leather supplier. I was very excited to place my first order and after I did, there were nothing but nightmares. I really feel like I was treated poorly but I kept my composure... stayed very polite and courteous until about my 15th phone call to them to get things put right. Been going on since November and I won't know until a few days from now if they really did refund my money. I don't want anyone else to have this experience but I'm not one to just run around spreading rumors either. What information is fair to share on the forum?? What do you think?
  20. OMG... couldn't have said it better! Thank you for a good, honest laugh of truth! I think confidence and a business plan are extremely important. Of course marketing yourself is crucial too. Unfortunately I don't have the liberty of putting 100% into my leather business as I home school our children, run the office end of my husband's business and we also have a small cow-calf operation. The plans and ideas I have developed over the years are overflowing from notepads, files and my mind but you've really got to have the time devoted because of that "half + half +half" stuff. Totally true. I run my business part time and I'm NON STOP working in my mind. I've seen a guy who appears successful making $500 saddles out of a shop at his home in (literally) the middle of nowhere, FL. No website, no ebay etc... but he's making a living. I don't know what he puts in those saddles and wouldn't recommend them as it costs me (wholesale) over $700 for quality materials to build a saddle... but he's been at it for many years and EVERYONE in central FL has heard of him and those who are backyard horsemen, swear by that little shop. Of course there's the other end of the spectrum ... just go to the TCAA website (http://tcowboyarts.org/members) if you haven't yet and see people selling western 'art' leather... saddles for $37,000 + Finding the niche is definitely priority and geographic location plays a role. Things that I know I could sell all day in CA don't do well here in FL. Good luck to you in your choice and God bless.
  21. I think it looks great. I agree 100% with Ken about quality of the cardstock and gloss is a good idea. I would personally change "We do a variety of articles..." To "We create" or even "We make" or "hand craft"
  22. I miss CA :o( Born and raised, always will be a California Girl!

  23. Thank you Wizcrafts, I'll definitely give them a call tomorrow!!
  24. Hi All, Just wondering if anyone knows of a bias binder attachment that would work with an Artisan 3000. I think that there are some out there that we could make fit my machine but I'm wondering if there is something that would handle up to 3 oz leather for bias binding on light to mid weight leather purses, cuffs etc or if they are only made for lighter weight materials (relative to leather). I would only be interested in a single fold attachment of course. Thanks in advance! I'm thinking this one might be another job for my machinist father-in-law ;o) Blessings, Natalie
