steveb Report post Posted March 13, 2008 cool - i like the brown color...and that texture on the tophat, looks really deep where did the art come from? and i like the fact you mark your seats with your mark asymetrically - really feels "custom"
Johanna Report post Posted March 13, 2008 Beeze- as usual, top notch work. Did you draw this pattern? I think the way you did the texture on the hat was a nice touch. I like the way you colored it, too- nice contrast effect in the design and a warm fade on the natural brown. (I celebrate every time you seatmakers don't have to dye it black!) Roger, you've got a whole lot of talent, and I enjoy looking at your work. Thanks for sharing. Johanna PS Just curious- approx. how much carving time do you have in a piece like that? Patterns and tooling, not dyeing and assembly. Which part do you enjoy the most?
Roger Report post Posted March 13, 2008 thanks steve! the art was customer supplied. the dye is a fade from dark brown to saddle tan to buckskin i always try to put my mark off center

Patterns and tooling, not dyeing and assembly. Which part do you enjoy the most? i guess i'll have to scan the artwork. it's a scetch and the hat had layers of highlights and i fealt inclined to try and incorperate as much of it as possible. the customer wanted a bit of color so i tried to make it work. i was a bit nervous about making the hat black but, it worked. patterns take no time and i may have two- three hours in the tooling. i have gotten to where i can do one of these seats including padding in 8 to 10 hours depending on the amount and complexity of the tooling. tis was an eight hour seat i have one this size coming up with a floral pattern as soon as i can draw it up. i am having to draw much of the artwork i am using right now. this guy likes brown

David Report post Posted March 13, 2008 Hey Roger, Very nice solo seat....nice crisp carving as usual. Do you ever use anitquing on your seats? I notice this one doesn't have any antiquing paste at all on it. Just curious. The seat looks great without it. Dave http://www.theobaldleather.com thanks david! i don't use antique on seats anymore. i used to use some now and then along with highlighter but, the stuff won't stay on a wet seat so i have worked to make my tooling stand on it's own. i don't recall the last seat i used some on Very nice. The design goes with the seat well and the tooling is great. thanks larry!

I use leather balm with atom wax to make it stay in place or neat lac works great also. Dave
