AndyL1 Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 Imagine the scene: It's 2am, I hear my dog causing chaos in the backyard. Hit the lights and she's wrestling with a skunk! Dog kills skunk, dog smells to high heaven, house smells like ass, baby wakes up and wants a bottle, starts crying. I'm trying to contain the dog meanwhile shoveling smelly dead skunk into garbage can. So, I'm in my boxers washing the dog at 2am. No tomato paste in the pantry so I grab the only thing handy that I think might work: SALSA! Me rubbing my skunky dog down at 2am with a jar of salsa and shampoo in the muddy side yard. Baby crying cause he wants to eat. House smells like skunk. Dead skunk shoveled into my garbage can on the front yard. All I can do is laugh. Wake up this morning, salsa is not effective. Have to wait untul after work to mix up some baking soda. That was my night/morning today. Quite the scene! :-) In need of another shower, Andy Quote
MADMAX22 Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Hahaha sounds like an adventure worthy of a great song (the one and onlyBasilis Poledouris) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkMhRvEmG6s...feature=related I hate skunk smell. When I was in CT they were everywhere, you had to dodge them going to work lol. Quote
Members wildrose Posted July 16, 2009 Members Report Posted July 16, 2009 The day before my inlaws to be came to visit my parents' farm for the first time, our dog got skunked right IN the mouth. I remember walking up the driveway, after my fiance dropped me off, thinking, "gosh, someone hit a skunk" then, realizing the smell got stronger the closer I got to the front door. As I opened the door, there stood our dog, looking miserable. Mom had tried several methods of cleaning him; but he stunk, the house stunk, and we had to open all the windows and burn every scented candle we had. I remember thinking: these people are gonna think we are such hicks! Quote
Members Deb59 Posted July 16, 2009 Members Report Posted July 16, 2009 We had a dog get sprayed so directly in the face that you could see the fumes rising off of her. Skunk Off Shampoo is the best stuff. But we were out of that, and tomatoe juice, sauce etc did not do anything. We called the vets around looking for the shampoo, none of them had it, but one gave me a recipe works well. Soap the dog up with Dawn Dish Soap, Sprinkle baking soda on and spread around in the soap. Pour White Vinigar over the suds & soda. The reaction of the Soda and Vinigar cut the smell, the soap keeps it in place. Suds the dog up good and rinse with water. Can re-treat if needed, then shampoo. :} Quote
Hilly Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Mix together the following ingredients in the following amounts. Very inexpensive and quite effective. Use as many recipes as it takes to do the job. 1/4c baking soda 1 bottle hydrogen peroxide 1 TBS detergent. Lather, let sit for a few minutes, rinse, repeat. Throw away the collar - it's a lost cause. Folks, I own 3 bird dogs, and every year at least one of them tangles with a skunk. The last one was at 10:00pm in a campground full of campers. We were NOT popular I wonder why dogs never learn? Same goes for porcupines.... Why do dogs never learn? Quote
Members wildrose Posted July 17, 2009 Members Report Posted July 17, 2009 what's tbs detergent? I'm going to pass this recipe along to my mom (who still has an Airedale terrier). Quote
Hilly Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 what's tbs detergent? I'm going to pass this recipe along to my mom (who still has an Airedale terrier). You can use any detergent you wish. I've always used Dawn dish detergent simply because it cuts greases so well because it's such a great surfactant. As long as the dog stays dry after using this treatment, you will just barely smell skunk if you bury your face in it's fur. If the dog gets wet, you will smell skunk (pretty mild) while it is wet for a period of about 2 - 3 weeks. I have used this remedy on more than a few occasions, and can allow my pets back into the house the same day. Hope this helps someone. I know from experience that the only thing tomatoe juice does is turn your dog orange. Beer just makes them sticky. Quote
