Members rickeyfro Posted January 11, 2011 Members Report Posted January 11, 2011 3M Super 77 I never glue the leather to the foam though, I glue the foam to the pan and I cover top and bottom of pan with leather and lace them together, Ive done seats with no leather on the bottom but I dont think theres any glue strong enough to keep that in place without rivets, maybe if its just gonna sit on a shelf but cant see a seat being ridden with nothing but glue keeping it together looks like i might be doing a seat for a local builder...can someome here pls tell me whats the best adhesive to use to glue the leather to the foam?? i also would prefer to use a really good adhesive to attach the leather to the seat pan rather than rives...any suggestions?? Moderator Art Posted January 12, 2011 Moderator Report Posted January 12, 2011 Glue the foam to the pan then shape it; use 3M #90 to glue foam to pan. The leather has to move a little on top of the foam so don't glue to foam. You can use 3M #88 or #90 to glue the leather to the bottom of the pan if you must, then you should put rivets in it just to make sure. You need to think of the dude or dudette sitting on that thing and the amount of moving around they will do, I just think over time the leather could work loose, maybe not. I don't do enough of these things to be the expert, I suspect a few others could pitch in? outcast Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 (edited) There's nothing wrong with gluing the top to the foam....a lot of seat builders do it. 3M Super 77 works fine for that. As far as gluing the leather to the pan....yes that is done quite often too. Prepare the leather by roughing the flesh side, & sand the edges of the seatpan with 50-60 grit sand paper. Use barge glue on both the leather & the pan...let it get tacky for awhile....press it on ...when yer satisfied with the fit HAMMER it. This method is time tested & and used on plastic, fiberglass, & steel seat pans. Members chainftw Posted January 22, 2011 Members Report Posted January 22, 2011 I agree with outcast . I have seen work that the leather was not glued to the foam and it didn't hold up . The leather pulled from the foam and stretched to look Floppy and ... bubbly . If they plan on using the seat a bit ,glue it. Good luck , Chain Quote CHAIN
