Ambassador Luke Hatley Posted February 25, 2011 Ambassador Report Posted February 25, 2011 Great Looking Straps..........when i see the caliber of work it makes me very Proud of you. There have some post stating that they could not keep their thread ....as clean as you did...what is your secret? Quote
Members cem Posted February 26, 2011 Members Report Posted February 26, 2011 Very nice Ray they are some fine looking guitar straps and Iike Luke said whats the secret to this mysterious actual white thread on dyed straps. Cheers, Clair Quote
Contributing Member UKRay Posted February 26, 2011 Author Contributing Member Report Posted February 26, 2011 Thanks for the kind words. No secret to the white thread other than keeping the work clean, dyeing the leather and burnishing it well, then sealing it properly before top stitching. Stuff we all do really. It takes a bit longer to do it properly but I like the results so it is worth it. Ray Quote

Contributing Member UKRay Posted February 27, 2011 Author Contributing Member Report Posted February 27, 2011 The only hardware on my straps is a single snap on the adjuster - you can get those from Tandy Leather Factory and the 'strap lock' at either end which should be available from any good guitar shop. Hope this helps, Ray Quote
Members Nighthawk Posted February 27, 2011 Members Report Posted February 27, 2011 where can a man find this hardware on your straps......UK or US...??? Thanks Here's a link to strap locks on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Schaller-Guitar-Strap-Buttons-Nickel/dp/B000960KNW/ref=sr_1_15?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1298837295&sr=1-15 I have a set of those on my bass. They are excellent!! So- UKRay- thanks for posting this. I've been planning a strap for my sons bass, and haven't yet started on it. Did you hand stitch your white thread, or is it machine done? I have shied away from doing this kind of project because I don't have a machine, and hand stitching it would take such a long time! Quote
Contributing Member UKRay Posted February 27, 2011 Author Contributing Member Report Posted February 27, 2011 This is all machine stitched. I make quite a few of these straps each week and wouldn't have the time to hand stitch. I use a big Highlead harness stitcher that seems to cope with almost any thickness of leather without needing any adjustment. It doesn't like thin thread though! LOL Ray Quote
Members dragonspit Posted February 28, 2011 Members Report Posted February 28, 2011 Ray, these all look so nice, so clean. Really liked them. I am a newbie and only done a few notebooks really, but want to do a strap or two for my brother, a bass player. He has so many and some real nice ones, dont know I could do them justice. I always thought that the straps for acoustics were wider than electrics, but you have yours on both. is that normal, abnormal. are straps a standard length with an adjustment at the end? if so, how long are they? I would love to get half way close to this. Quote
Contributing Member UKRay Posted February 28, 2011 Author Contributing Member Report Posted February 28, 2011 I just sell straps... all kinds of straps but I rarely ask what type of guitar they will be attached to unless the customer makes a specific request for something weird. Then curiosity takes over LOL. Individual people have their individual tastes. Some like a wide strap and others like a narrow strap. All my straps are made to order so the customer tells me what length and width they want. Get down to your local guitar shop and check out the range of straps in there, you may be surprised at how many variations there are. When I was doing my research on guitar straps I spoke to literally dozens of guitar players trying to get some idea what was required. Everyone came back to me with a different set of requirements - which, I guess, is why we all get to make plenty of custom guitar straps. I'd be interested to hear other people's view on strap length. Minimum and maximum lengths are always a very real question when putting together a stock item. Ray Quote
Members roo4u Posted February 28, 2011 Members Report Posted February 28, 2011 ray....those are beautiful straps....that guy is trusting alot of money to your work. straplocks are really the only safe way to hang a heavy expensive guitar around your neck. dragonspit.....the width of the strap is really just a matter of personal preference. some like wider some narrower. Yep! Myself, I like about 2.25 inches. For my sword, I like 1.25. We're all different... Quote
