Books for holsters

Recommended Posts

Hello. I'm new to this craft. I have read The Art of Handsewing and I have How to Make Holster, both by Al Stohlman. Are there any other books you would recommend about holsters and accesories like mag and knife pouches? I'm looking for something that would get into a little more detail, particularily into finishing and detailing. Thanks ahead of time.

:welcome: to Leatherworker.net!!

One really good place to start is right here on the forum. Locate the search button on the top of the page, go to advanced search, and type in some key words. Note: There's a LOT of information there, so you might be in for a good bit of reading.

Another suggestion is to just post the question in "How do I do that?". You'll find that most of us are quite forthcoming in our answers, and that few (actually I can't think of anyone) take an "it's my secret" attitude. Ask all the questions you want, limited of course by how much you want to type between breaths.

Probably little things like boning in edges of a pistol, what type of stain, dye, paint, finish, etc. to use.

Keith, Welcome to the forum!

Stohlmans books "The Art of Making Leather Cases" is a set of 3. It has great information that when used on your project, you can use the techniques found in these books. The way some things are made, assembled, sewn, in the books can be applied to any project. They are a great resource to have as a beginner in this craft. I refer to mine quite often.

Also once you have seen how some items are assembled, take a look at the work some of the holster makers on this site have posted. You can get some idea of how it should look finished, review the books and look for methods to produce it.

John Bianchi's holster video's and DVD's are a huge help.

Also post questions and if you are starting to produce a piece that has you baffled, post a photo with the question so we can see where you are on the progress and maybe see the snag.

That's what I mean. I would like to learn more about burnishing or boing edges, wet molding, staining, finishing and all those things that makea rough project into a finished and refined product.
