Members Catchndreams Posted April 1, 2014 Members Report Posted April 1, 2014 Year 1954, my Grandfather walk me to the Tac room in the barn. Taught me how to make a strap. Beveled and coffee sun dyed. When it was done......He Whooped me with it.....can't remember why. And that was the beginning. Quote Dennis from Durango
Members dirkba Posted April 25, 2014 Members Report Posted April 25, 2014 At first I thought this was an April fools day topic - then I started following it and now i am adding to it! My first project was a bullet holder (purse) made of scrap material I found lying around. It was made with only the bare essentials at the time - knife, sewing thread and a needle. I have always wanted to improve it. This thread has forced me to do something about the old holder (left pic - new and the old) that has served me well for almost 20 years. Quote
Members BDAZ Posted April 25, 2014 Members Report Posted April 25, 2014 (edited) I got hooked on the leather biz because I needed a new belt and I couldn't find a 1 1/4 off the shelf to fit the buckle I have had for 40 years. You are looking at a VERY expensive belt! I have worn it every day since completed. It works! pants haven't fallen off once! Cya! Bob Edited April 25, 2014 by BDAZ Quote
Chief31794 Posted April 25, 2014 Report Posted April 25, 2014 My first leather project was sandals for Roman Soldiers, oh wait, maybe that was my 2nd or 3rd, can't remember. Actually, I made a belt at a US Army Craftshop in 1969 and have been doing leather ever since. Cheif Quote "Life's too short to carry ugly leather"
Members otmeeks Posted April 26, 2014 Members Report Posted April 26, 2014 My first leather project was a pair of suspenders for my grandfather. He said he liked them but never seen him wear them. Quote
Members Glendon Posted April 27, 2014 Members Report Posted April 27, 2014 (edited) My first leather project was the classic three part pocket knife sheath that I made at Boy Scout camp when I was 10 or 11. I did a number of small projects after that. The knife sheath got lost in a move somewhere along the way, but I still have the scout wallet that was my second or third project. The lacing is so bad on that thing. Edited April 27, 2014 by Glendon Quote

Ambassador Luke Hatley Posted April 30, 2014 Ambassador Report Posted April 30, 2014 My start was a Leather Visor...somewhere in the 60's. Bought a Visor Kit, one tool and a bottle of Omega Dye, at Tandy. Made my visor then about 15 more that summer. Then learned to do Basket Weave stamping , on the billfolds then on to belts. This has been a great Learning experience for me and enjoy it more than I ever did... Quote Luke
