Members Rohn Posted June 17, 2014 Members Report Posted June 17, 2014 Here is a sheath I made for a pair of Sheep Shearing Shears. 9-10 ounce Hermon oak and all hand stitched. Quote
Members Lassiter Posted June 18, 2014 Members Report Posted June 18, 2014 Looks nice..........but can you say sheep shearing shears sheath three time fast?? Quote
Members Rohn Posted June 18, 2014 Author Members Report Posted June 18, 2014 Thanks Lassiter. I knew that was a tongue twister. Quote
Members MonicaJacobson Posted June 19, 2014 Members Report Posted June 19, 2014 Nice! But do you actually use those things? My hand hurts just to think of it. Quote
Members Rohn Posted June 19, 2014 Author Members Report Posted June 19, 2014 I personally have never used them but some people do. Thanks for the nice comment about the leather work. Quote
Members Colt W Knight Posted June 19, 2014 Members Report Posted June 19, 2014 I have help shear hundreds of sheep, I can't imagine having to do it with hand shears. Worse than hand stitching a guitar strap. Nice sheath. Quote

Mostly, the old time hand shears like these are used by people who are fitting sheep for showing (competing) at livestock fairs. Although a few people may use them to shear a small farm flock, most sheep are shorn by electrically powered shears, primarily shaft driven ones. I grew up competing with my sheep in 4-H and FFA fairs, and spent many hours using shears just like these. They are just like leather knives.......the sharper they are.....the easier they are to use. You can adjust the spring action simply by bending the handle, and by using them, you develop your hand strength. While I never built a belt worn sheath since I never had any need to carry a set of sheap shears around, we did build sheaths that did contain the blades because like I said, the blades were scary sharp. Members cgleathercraft Posted June 19, 2014 Members Report Posted June 19, 2014 Used to to show sheep for 4-H. a sheath like this would have been helpful when doing touch ups just before a show! It looks great! had to read the heading 3 times to get it right though lol Quote
