byggyns Report post Posted December 31, 2014 I like the Idea. I also think that the coordinator should be the one who choses the next pattern- that way there is consistency of project flow. It would also be helpful to those of us with less experience if there were a step-by-step build along available. The winner from the previous month has to do a photo or video build along for the next project- to be published after that winner is selected. This would provide a detailed reference guide for any new leatherworker visiting the site. It would also cut down on construction related questions as the year progresses. I heard this story once... http://kk.org/cooltools/archives/000216 "The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the “quantity” group: fifty pound of pots rated an “A”, forty pounds a “B”, and so on. Those being graded on “quality”, however, needed to produce only one pot -albeit a perfect one – to get an “A”. Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the “quantity” group was busily churning out piles of work – and learning from their mistakes – the “quality” group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay." I also got the idea from a local Austin musician who sends out a word or phrase to other invited songwriters. They have a week to write, record and return the song. If they don't they are removed from the email list.... This website offers a lot of information and you can spend hours, days and months "theorizing about perfection"... but the point is to always be making something. Have no fear! Heck make 10 of every project each month ... mess up, stain over it, unstitch it and stitch it again... put it in the throw away box and come back to it a year later and cut it up and make something else... I have some really ugly stuff from the first year but I kept going. To the new people - you will make ugly stuff... but keep going. I don't want anyone to have to put a video tutorial up, who has time? If you really want to, go for it. But I think tboyce's patterns are pretty explanatory. I also wanted to use the patterns submitted by tboyce to show our appreciation for his willingness to share. I know my time will be limited because my wife is due with our first any day now, that's why I made it a monthly challenge. I had originally thought about making it a weekly or bi-weekly challenge. While looking things over and doing some measuring, I discover that the pattern that I printed is smaller than the measurement printed on the pattern. The exterior measures 7 1/4 x 7 1/4, but the pattern states 7 1/2 x 7 1/2. The interior measures 6 3/4 x 7 1/4, but the pattern states 7 1/2 x 7 1/2. Which is the measurement to use? It appears, in actual size that it will all fit together, but I'm still a novice, and I might be missing something. I believe Tboyce made the pattern. I would like to take part, but as a complete beginner think your idea for 2 patterns a month would suit both beginners and experts alike. I think going from easy to hard risks boring the experts at the beginner and losing the beginners towards the end.
