Good Weight For Pocket Holsters

I want to make a pocket holster for my S&W J-Frame 637. All I have is some 8/9oz that I have used for belt holsters and that is too thick and stiff for this use. Before I order I wanted to get an idea of what would be right. Maybe a 5/6oz? I was thinking something like a Del Fatti/Milt Sparks style pocket holster. I have a pattern worked up for that. I may also experiment with a Kramer style where its just wrapped around the gun.

Driften, . . . this is my pocket holster I made for my Colt Det Special, . . . works really well.

The leather is 4/5 oz, . . . measured out at about .070 thickness, . . . veggie tan, . . . no oil, no dye, no finish, . . . turned it flesh side out to aid in the holster retention in the pocket, . . . but not for the gun.

I sewed the front edge together to give it some stiffness, . . . back is just contact cemented, . . . have carried it that way for years.

I like and use 6/7 for pocket holsters. R J Hedley used that weight and he suggested that weight to me. He was known for great pocket holsters, so I was not going to argue with his success and experience.

I use 7 to 8 ounce for mine. 5 to 6 seems too light and 9 to 10 too heavy.

I order 8-9 oz by the side. For pocket holsters I fish out some of the thinner sections I toss in my misc leather boxes. Assuming it averages out to about 6-7, thinner than I want for OWB. If I did a lot of them, I would start ordering leather just for them. Probably 6-7. Right now, I don't so I go with thin for the side pieces.

I have used 5/6 and 6/7, and I think I prefer the 6/7.

I typically go a little thicker on the outside. I feel it hides the profile of the firearm a little better. The exterior I use around 9 oz. The interior I usually go around 7 oz.

I just finished this pocket holster for a Sig Sauer P938. The black shark was around 4.5oz and I backed it with grade A 5 oz Hermann Oak veg tan. Giving me a total of 9.5 oz on the exterior.The interior was grade A 7 oz. Hermann Oak veg tan.

That is a very nice looking holster. It looks a lot like the pattern I made to try out.

It seems from this thread people have done well with leather weights all over the map from 4oz to 9oz. I cut my pattern from 8-9oz HO veg tan, but when I put it in my pocket it seemed like it would be too stiff, but I did not actually assemble it. I still have not decided on what to order..
