Members Austyn Posted June 19, 2016 Members Report Posted June 19, 2016 Hello friends, I'm looking into upgrading my leather supplier and I'm not sure where to start. right now I get my 10-11oz HermannOak from Springfield Co springfieldleather.com/25849/Bend%2CBelt%2CHermannOak%2CSngl%2C9-10/ and now I ask where can I find high quality hides for around the same price. I use this leather to make belts, collars, leashes, suspenders, accessories, ECT. thank you, Austyn Quote
Contributing Member JLSleather Posted June 19, 2016 Contributing Member Report Posted June 19, 2016 You can get better leather for $2 LESS in Curwensville. http://wickett-craig.com/leathers/ Quote
Members Red Cent Posted June 20, 2016 Members Report Posted June 20, 2016 Won't be able to get anything shipped until after July 1 from W&C. Tried to order last week and they could not promise delivery until then. Quote
Contributing Member JLSleather Posted June 20, 2016 Contributing Member Report Posted June 20, 2016 OH, that's right.. annual shut-down this time of year. Still, check their site for their distributors. Quote
Members JerseyFirefighter Posted June 20, 2016 Members Report Posted June 20, 2016 I was kind of disappointed at W&C. I understand that they are just slow to process orders (mine took about 3 weeks) so plan ahead, but would have liked their drum dyed to be struck through. The Bridle softened once over felt nice, but the Latigo had almost a cardboard feel to it. I've yet to try their veg tan though so I cannot speak to their quality. If JLS is saying it's good to go it's likely good to go. Quote
Contributing Member JLSleather Posted June 20, 2016 Contributing Member Report Posted June 20, 2016 (edited) I'd like to see leather I'm buying from ANYWHERE, and that's how I do it now. But as a rule, W/C has been quite good. Incidentally, you can get the dyed struck through, but they don't do it with ALL of it and you need to tell them you need it that way. Last I talked with them, there's no charge for it, just may throw off the schedule some. I like their english bridle, but have never tried the latigo. I do like the tooling leather, which I generally use about 8 oz. It's a bit lighter color than H.O. as a rule, and carves well. Edited June 20, 2016 by JLSleather Quote
cardinal leather Posted June 20, 2016 Report Posted June 20, 2016 I use the W/C belt latigo for my leashes and collars, works well, seems to be less oil stuffed into it. Like JLS says so far the product is quite good. I am not a large account at a couple of hides at a time so always ask if they can make the delivery in a couple of weeks. So far So good. Quote

She had told me I had to buy a whole drum's worth of leather to get a "special request" for it to be struck through. it was like 50 sides. I was going to try Weaver's stuff before I decide what im going to do. I like RJF's latigo and their prices are good.. but as previously mentioned aside from their bridle not being struck through I liked W&C's bridle. Quote
MADMAX22 Posted June 22, 2016 Report Posted June 22, 2016 The issue with HO seems to be the low end hides you get from the resellers. If you get a good HP side they are great for tooling. If you can afford 5 or 10 hides depending on type of leather they are worth it IMHO. WC has some nice leather, I prefer there skirting leather split down to the thickness I need. Quote

I personally think it tools and molds a little better but honestly both are top notch. I like the skirting in the russet color which is about the same color as a nice sun tanned vegtan. Not alot of steady sunlight up here in the northwest except a couple months in summer. Compared to most leathers you get retail even the lowest grade WC that you get is still pretty nice. Quote

Contributing Member JLSleather Posted July 15, 2016 Contributing Member Report Posted July 15, 2016 W/C has nice leather. There's no difference in the tannage between the "skirting" and the "tooling". HO does the same thing, they sell "strap", "tooling", and "holster", but its' the same leather. The guy who first posted is in PA already, which I would consider a no-brainer. I really like HO, and use a good bit of it, but if I lived where I could make it an afternoon trip I'd be at W/C a LOT more often Quote

Members uknative48 Posted August 9, 2016 Members Report Posted August 9, 2016 I have yet to find anyone better for "English" bridle than Wickett & Craig. I'm now living in the UK and afraid it will be cost prohibitive to import. Quote

Members fivewayswelshcobs Posted August 9, 2016 Members Report Posted August 9, 2016 I agree with Matt after all we are the home of English bridle leather- it says it all in the name. Quote
Members CaptQuirk Posted August 25, 2016 Members Report Posted August 25, 2016 I also need a new source. Anything near or in Georgia? Quote
