Mattsbagger Report post Posted October 25, 2016 (edited) My 9 year old was by me for the weekend. Wanted to help with daddy's new hobby.lol. She did every thing but cut out the leather. She did cut the pattern out but wanted me to do the leather. Dyed with Fiebings oil dye and finished with 50/50 Resoline. My question is its pretty stiff will it "soften" up in time? She gave to her mom for her birthday. You can tell where she started and the progress of her stitching. Wedgetail Report post Posted October 25, 2016 That's a solid effort! Yeah mate, it should soften over time.... could be a long time or a short time depending on the leather, but there are ways to speed that up if needed.
TheModifier Report post Posted October 25, 2016 Does she give lessons? I swear she does better work than I do after a year of playing around as a newbie myself. Well done, I'm sure you're proud of her. Now "your" hobby has just doubled in cost, lol. But worth every penny when it comes to the priceless time you get to spend with family. :D
Big Sioux Saddlery Report post Posted October 25, 2016 (edited) Some of the best and most memorable times in my life were when my kids spent time in the shop with me and wanted to work on their own project. Although I got nothing done myself, it made for good memories that will last a lifetime. Make the most of this time with your daughter, they grow up way too fast! And tell her nice job on her project! Edited October 25, 2016 by Big Sioux Saddlery
CaptQuirk Report post Posted October 25, 2016 Try hitting it with some mink oil. That should hlp soften it up, and protect/condition the leather. Your girl did a very nice job, that is awesome stitching for a first timer... I'm actually a little jealous! Last Christmas, I cut out a guitar strap for my oldest boy, threw in the hardware, and said "Have at it". With a little guidance, he drew a pattern, transferred it, and tooled the leather himself. When he started getting compliments from not only friends, but guitar stores too, he just about burst with pride.Me too
