Members venator Posted October 28, 2016 Members Report Posted October 28, 2016 So I've spent today practicing wood grain style dyeing. Working with an airbrush as well as splatter and sponge techniques. This was the first piece of leather I tried it on and I'm pretty happy with the results. Quote

Members TinkerTailor Posted October 28, 2016 Members Report Posted October 28, 2016 I like it. It looks quite real. I might go over it with a really light thinned wash to cover the little bit of natural leather showing here and there. What scale is that, Like is that a piece of leather 2" by 6" or is it 2 feet by 6 feet? Cause if it is 2' by 6' the grain is too big....and you don't understand what scrap is supposed to be..... Members venator Posted October 28, 2016 Author Members Report Posted October 28, 2016 Haha, it's 3"x10". I wanted to try something 3" wide because that's how wide the guitar strap I'm practicing for is. Quote
Members TinkerTailor Posted October 28, 2016 Members Report Posted October 28, 2016 Looks just about right then. Quote
Members CaptQuirk Posted October 29, 2016 Members Report Posted October 29, 2016 Try adding some swirls and knotholes, no wood is that nice Quote
Members Brown64 Posted October 29, 2016 Members Report Posted October 29, 2016 Looks like wood to me. Good job Quote

But honestly youre right. It's the same thing I was thinking, I need to bust out a few knots in a darker brown colour to really make it work. Quote
Members CaptQuirk Posted October 29, 2016 Members Report Posted October 29, 2016 It could be worse, your wood could be termite riddled. Quote
Members venator Posted October 29, 2016 Author Members Report Posted October 29, 2016 Lol. Well I'll try some more with some more knots hopefully today, some darker brown areas too. Quote
Members Harry Marinakis Posted October 30, 2016 Members Report Posted October 30, 2016 Woah! How did you do that? Quote
Members venator Posted October 31, 2016 Author Members Report Posted October 31, 2016 6 hours ago, Harry Marinakis said: Woah! How did you do that? Using Tandy pro waterstain: Spray evenly with light brown, use toothbrush to splatter medium brown and immediately wipe with wet sponge in downward direction. Put medium brown on sponge, wipe downward to add larger grain sections. Air brush knots in medium brown (in future use dark brown fit knots and dagger strokes). Resoline Quote

Members venator Posted November 1, 2016 Author Members Report Posted November 1, 2016 Here's my second try. I used some dark brown to add some knots and highlights. Still working on my airbrushing skills. Quote
Members CaptQuirk Posted November 1, 2016 Members Report Posted November 1, 2016 Nice! I even see termites moving in towards it! Nevermind... the bugs were on my screen. Quote
Members MartinHrcka Posted November 1, 2016 Members Report Posted November 1, 2016 (edited) Nicely done! I think you would fool anyone with this piece of "wood" Edited November 1, 2016 by MartinHrcka Quote
