Mexican loop holster ?

Recommended Posts

Is there a formula for how wide to make the loops so it doesn't wrinkle so much ? I know there are many pistols and different widths of the gun  . I have 1/4 inch slots done , I just not sure about how far to cut them out from each side . Does this make sense ?

Thanks anyway and any info. is welcome ,

I feel your pain. I had my first attempt at a holster split one of the loops, and I actually added some extra room because I didn't think the dimension allowed enough room. (Al Stohlman book). There has to be a more accurate and dependable guide out there. As for me, I'll just add what I think is reasonable, screw the books. I also just completed a Ranger style belt, and I thought "I wonder if they allowed for the additional thickness of a Ranger belt to this dimension."

Well, I was right, they didn't, and I had to "unstitch" the billet end and re-make it. Lesson learned. Apparently I'm pretty sharp for a newb!

Good luck with your search for an answer.

Sorry for the late reply but your holster looks great . Guess I'll just keep trying . Leather is high if you make mistakes .

Sorcerer1,

I have made a Mexican Loop Holster for my son's cap gun.  I found Will Ghormley's walk through on how to make the Johnny Ringo Holster most informative.  After I sewed the holster main seam I cased the skirt of the holster, holster and put the cap gun in the holster and inserted it through the loops.  Then I pushed down on the edge of the skirt forming the loops around the holster with gun in the holster.  There are other pointers Ghormley mentions which will help you in making the holster.

Your question makes a lot of sense, . . . unfortunately like the one "When will the sun burn out?", . . . neither has a perfect answer.

Each holster will be just enough different from it's predecessor, . . . that the dimension used on the first, . . . "may" not work on the next.

As previously mentioned, . . . dampen the flap, . . . start the holster through it, . . . put the gun in the holster, . . . then pull her up good and tight.  Most of the time, you will be able to get away with using the same dimension, . . . but if you are very careful with the leather thickness, . . . cutting the blank out, . . . and your sew line, . . . it'll work good.

The key is getting the first one done so you have a solid pattern.  Take your time on it, . . . it's worth every extra moment you spend on it.

May God bless,

Dwight
