Members velvetwastaken Posted September 20, 2017 Members Report Posted September 20, 2017 Best way to get started is to just dive in! Do some reading and research (on here, books, youtube (see links barehandcustoms shared), leather shops like Tandy or others) and then just start. I sat around an fussed about not having the right tools or not knowing exactly how to do something for a long time, but leather working is a craft, an art, a manual skill that must be developed over time.... The time will go by anyways, so you might as well use it to practice! Quote
Members D2G Posted September 20, 2017 Members Report Posted September 20, 2017 Hello Friend! Dive here, there is beaucoup to learn. If you can try to explain your tastes to work interests, carving, sewing, hand sewing, chrome leather, veg etc ... you could perhaps save yourself learning something you do not wanna to use. Quote

Hopefully I'll get some nice looking stuff out of it as well, and maybe even a marketable skill way on down the road. In the meantime it's great mental therapy! Quote
Members DJole Posted October 4, 2017 Members Report Posted October 4, 2017 (edited) Someone referred the Ian Atkinson videos above -- those are great places to learn the basic craft. Once you get started on stitching, watch everything on Youtube by Nigel Armitage over in the UK, for information on expert saddle stitching. Like this one, for example (but realize also that he has many other videos on Youtube and his main website): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGuiha5S2oE Edited October 4, 2017 by DJole Quote \D.
