Fire88 Report post Posted November 25, 2017 I'm going to be buying a sewing machine in the near future I'm looking at either a 227R or 3500. I'll be doing some bags no less than 6oz total and some fire shields at 20+ and a few holsters and maybe some horse tack and cattle show halters. My concern is I may be at the limits of the 227r too much/limited to 207 Thread and then again worried about stitching 6oz with a 3500. bikermutt07 Report post Posted November 25, 2017 It's the world we live in. The 227r will handle anything on the thin to medium thickness. The 3500 will handle all the big stuff that will fit into it. I suggest finding which can you make a profit with faster. Buy that one and save for the other. CowboyBob Report post Posted November 25, 2017 The best way to find out is bring some leather & we'll try it out,the 6 oz & we can try it on the CB3500,I'm sure it'll work w/the #138 thread on the bags & then you'll also have it for the heavier leather too.We do have both machines on the floor ready to go.Your more than welcome to come in anytime during our normal business hours 8-4 during the week & Sat 8-12. If your looking at doing holsters and horse tack I reckon you will need at least the 3500 but a 4500 would better still as as far as I know the main difference is that the 4500 can lift higher than the 3500. I have to say you would be able to get down to the 6oz ok with it alright but a narrow feed dog and throat plate can get you right down to 4oz garmet as well if you want. I am not sure how you will go getting the narrow plates and dog and I would look into that first. Here is a couple of pictures of mine might help.
