Need Flat Braiding Help

Recommended Posts

I can three strand braid a pigtail, . . . and that's about my talent at this point.

I was asked over the weekend by a lady if I could make her a braided "hair strap" for want of another term.

It would be about 18 inches long, . . . and with a clasp, . . . it turns into a circle.  She wears it behind her ears and up over the top of her head, keeping her hair from flopping down around her ears.

The one she has now is a round braid, . . . and she asked me for a flat braided one, . . . maybe 3/8 inches wide, . . .

I told her I would look into it.

Anybody got a suggestion as to how I could accomplish such a task??

You have my many thanks if you know the trick.

May God bless,

Dwight

The guy in Scotland that does videos has one on flat braids. The one I saw was actually a round braid that transitions into a flat braid. Interesting, I did a small one, just to prove to myself that I could. I'd go to youtube and search for flat braid.

It's UK Saddlery. It's called a fishtail braid.

You could google a 'carrick mat'. What you have described sounds like a very small copy of something used on old sailing ships. If you used leather lace instead of rope, and made it a certain way, it could end up round and flat.

YouTube does have a lot of good videos to show how to braid something. My question is what will you be using to braid it and how many strands do you want to use? You may need to cut your own lace for it if you are using leather. And it will probably need to be fairly thin.

There are a lot of variations on braids too.

I'm thinking either a 4 or 5 strand flat braid would be best. And if you can go up to 1/2" you can do a 4 strand braid with purchased 1/8" lace.

Thanks, everyone, . . . getting crowded to get it in before Christmas, . . . but I'm gonna have to take a shot at it afterwards.

Maybe near the wood stove sometime in January .... lol

May God bless,

Dwight
