Rolandranch Report post Posted June 10, 2018 Here is another wallet I just finished for my brother's 18th birthday (today). It is stingray and pigskin. Comments/critique are welcome. Thanks for looking! -Ryan
garypl Report post Posted June 10, 2018 Looks good Roland! Only comment I have is the inside stitching on the left side looks uneven. What happened there? Gary

Gary Thanks, Gary! Actually, it happened more than just there. Stingray is a pain to stitch because those little bumps are extremely hard so the needle of the machine couldn't always go exactly where I wanted it to. That's why I used the black thread so it wasn't as noticeable. Edited June 10, 2018 by Rolandranch
garypl Report post Posted June 10, 2018 I think the outside looks good - just noticed the white thread on the inside. Never worked with stingray - sounds troublesome! Gary

Gary Ah, that white you see is the inside of the pigskin... Thanks for pointing that out I need to darken those spots. And yes, stingray is very troublesome! It's hard to cut it and those bumps break and shatter rather than leaving a clean edge. I think that's why most of the time you see stingray in an inlay without the edges showing. skinhacker Report post Posted June 10, 2018 I have been thinking of doing a stingray holster inlay. I may rethink that

ComputerDoctor Report post Posted June 10, 2018 That's beautiful! I've caught a lot of Stingray's on the California coast but have never seen their flesh tanned. I like it.:) Did you get it at a Tandy store? When I use any super thin hide, I superglue the edges before I make the final pattern cut and stamp holes for stitching, it keeps things together and makes it easier to burnish. I suggest that when you take a picture of the inside of a wallet, you use a $100 bill---it's much more impressive:) Sam

I use super glue as well. $100 bill?! If only I had $100! I figured if I put a couple $100 bills in there it would make the wallet look cheap. Everyone would look at it and say, "What beautiful money!"

charon Report post Posted June 11, 2018 Good job on the wallet! I recently tried to hand-cut and hand stitch stingray leather and I totally feel your pain. My stitching looks okay on the lining side and terrible on the outside. Made it on the list of things I will never do again, especially since these skins are pretty pricey in my area. kyrrk Report post Posted June 11, 2018 I heard it is really pain working with stingray lol. To have an idea, how much does it costs? I only got snakeskin, phyton scrap and crocodile scrap which will be useful for making watch strap. That's a nice wallet, btw.
charon Report post Posted June 11, 2018 My skin was around $45. The thing is the size is enough for one outer part of a wallet, so it's hit or miss. The most pain for me was that given that these pearls are really hard (in fact these skins are fire resistant) your cutting edge looks really bad. So you basically have no choice but doing a turning edge as Ryan did. I tried to beautify the edges with edge paint and ended with throwing it around the workshop. You may have be lucky with one skin but for me there's simply no way for a consistent small series, so I ended up discarding the plans. There are versions where the pearls are sharpened but I don't think the handling will be easier with these. As has been said, it's good for inlays in belt buckles or things like that. My skills just ain't good enough for that stuff. Again Ryan, good job on your wallet, I bet your brother will be happy with it.
