@RockyAussie tension on these threads would break your scales  aims be honest with ya, ifn I gotta do all that polishing then it'd be quicker to handstitch everything I do. But I do see what you're talking about and can understand the reasoning. Nothing catching so far just for some reason machine got out of tension. I'm slowly but surely learning more about it.

@JLSleather yep. That's exactly what I did. And fiddled with tension some more. And that pig might self identify as a bear. :dunno:

pic turned for some reason but you can still get the jist of it.

All is well that ends well they say. Learned some things here too. I had a sense, when Clintok put that photo up of his stitching in response to Ferg, that he was going to beat this and somewhere in there he told us what he did for work and I knew for sure he had this beat in time, with all the good info being posted. I'm sure I wasn't the only one walking to my machine checking something and some here obviously did way more than that.

What Rocky Aussie recently posted about the lower tension polish and oil. Well in the checking (radically altering) my machine upper tensions during this effort I noticed how choppy my lower tension was and thought that needs some attention. Oil on the felt crossed my mind but the polishing he recommends didn't, that will occur too now.

Kudos to him and Wiz for some added things to check on bobbins going forward. Combined posts, this thread is an arsenal on clone tension issues. I think they only thing we may have missed and I may have missed that myself, is checking for any contamination below the bobbin spring. If it wasn't perviously it is now.

I run that 180 degree thread path nearly all of the time on my top tension. Definitely helps keep the thread where it belongs.

Wait.. so to be clear .. what you did is this?

HOW did I know the pink pig is a "she"?  My little girl said so.

Yes, I lower that thread guide as far as possible. Some machines will have more room to move the guide than others.

Anyone "self-identifying" is simply and quickly asked to leave.  My party and I'll snub who I want to. :yeah:

@Wizcrafts I tried to move that loop as you suggested but it only moved maybe a 32nd of an inch. But it's working now so it's all good!

As bugstruck mentioned, I did learn some things to check for in the future and during this ordeal I learned some pretty good info.

@RockyAussie don't take what I said to heart. Reading back over it looked like it may have been a smart ass remark. It was all in good humor.

@JLSleather I knew I'd get a response outta you! B)

Again THANKS TO ALL THAT HELPED GET THIS THING BACK SEWING!!

Hide's not that thin and I didn't think any thing said was but humour anyway. If I ever say anything that seems not right I would WAY prefer they say so cause I could learn something new myself. I went and got a new set of fish scales and that was a waste of $10.00 bucks, they would not show any thing under a pound of pull.Got me thinker workin and how I could hammer this problem out - See the pictures

1st pic - dont bother with these scales 1.JPG

I set about getting the tensions on my machine finely balanced first. I started with some quite firm veg at 3+mm (8oz) and set up with 20m (138) thread top and bottom and a Schmetz NM:160 Size 23 794 LR needle. Note not knots to the top

1b2.JPG

No knots under

I then went straight over to a 1.4mm(3 1/2oz) garment leather. No knots on top

No knots on bottom

I then went straight over to the first piece and doubled it up. Still no adjustments made.

Bottom looks good

Now I set about getting some way of measuring these tensions. The results in a bit of a nutshell is the bobbin was just over 1pound if hung as shown and the top 3 pound hung as shown. Note: these setting are more ideal if doing wallets or purses, handbags etc.

For the bobbin tension I ran the thread up to the thread guide above and GENTLY allowed the weight down. The hammer will hold just.

I will post more soon.

Next I got the top tension which comes out just over 3 pounds (1pound and 2 pound hammers) .I hung them down over the smooth area being careful to not let the thread get caught in the crack. For those that would like to see metric grams as against ounces I am showing pictures of both.

I intend to get another set of digital scales to try out like in this ebay listing https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/WH-A05L-LCD-Portable-Digital-Electronic-Scale-10-45kg-10g-for-Fishing-Luggage-TJ/172412860830?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649 to hopefully provide some more references on other thicknesses and machines types.

If this is likely to be of interest please let me know here and I will start this off in a separate dedicated post. You can follow me also if you would like to be advised of any updates to this.

@RockyAussie 3 pounds is more like it. Or more on my machine. Plan on getting some scales just outta curiosity. And I been catching some pretty good size sun perch lately too. So win both ways. Thanks for the reference. My tension might be a "tad" over. Seriously will cut your finger when pulling slack if not held right.

Now let's talk about them hammers. You got a bit of redneck in your blood? That's something we'd do down here in the south

Whatever works! Always more n one way to skin a cat! I'm checking eBay now. Found one but not very good reviews. And my nephew wants his fish weighed right. I put a fish in a bag and threw it on bathroom scales. He said "that ain't the way the pros do it". Where these kids come up with stuff like that???
