Beginners Leather

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Thanks for accepting me to the forum. I recently bought a book on leatherworking by Otis Ingrams, which is great, however, after looking through it I am not sure where to start when it comes to actually buy some leather preferably some cheaper leather to practice with. Eventually, I want to make some simple passport holders for my travel shop.  I'm from the UK so if anyone could help, that would be great.

Many Thanks,

Sam :)

Abbey England are about one of the best places in the world to get some leather, tools and supplies from. I've only dealt with them by email, but its always been well worth it, even tho' they're 12,000kms away.

You should get in contact with Ian Atkinson, who lives up in Leeds.
He's got a website here: <http://ianatkinson.net/leather/>
His website also has a lot of video instruction about a lot of different topics-- tools, techniques, and materials.

Now then Sam!

Welcome to the forum. What sort of things do you want to make, just passport holders or maybe some other items too? I can suggest a bunch of places you can get leather, at various prices, but will need to know what sort of things you want to make.

Tandy is an American chain of leather craft stores which is aimed mostly at hobbyists and beginners, but they have a couple of shops in Britain. Search Google for 'Tandy Leather Manchester' and you will get the prices in £. You might even make it across the Pennines one day and visit their shop.

Many of the members of this forum are quite experienced and tend to look down on Tandy, but it would at least be worth seeing what they have. Their prices are a bit on the high side, but if you have several items to buy it may be worth buying into their discount scheme

also, contact Le Prevo up in Newcastle. They often have odd hides at discount prices. A large piece from them costs less than a small piece from Tandy, plus they have eons of experience
