Members BorisBaddenov Posted November 13, 2018 Author Members Report Posted November 13, 2018 OK -- I've settled on my first project. Drum roll please ...... A stitching pony! I have a decent shop, and plenty of wood scraps. Quick run to the hardware store and I should be all set. I have some old wooden chairs, maybe I can use two of those and end up with a Stitching Horse Peace- Boris Quote

But if you decide you want/need a stitching horse check out pages 98-104 https://ia802605.us.archive.org/32/items/farmwoodwork00roeh/farmwoodwork00roeh.pdf Quote
Members rustyj58 Posted December 2, 2018 Members Report Posted December 2, 2018 Boris, I'm betting you were not expecting so many replies were you? Us people that make things from HAMBURGER WRAPPERS are quite a friendly bunch. And one thing we ALL have in common is that we all started at ground zero. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!! That's what that scrap leather is for. READ READ READ The Stohlman books are where I learned and I am still learning today. Now we have the interweb and YouTube and so much more at our fingertips. Every project I do I pick apart with a neutron microscope and I see, and feel EVERY mistake yet about 99.3 % of people will NEVER notice it. Moal is, Practice makes BETTER. Don't beat yourself up and keep at it. The YouTube videos listed in most of the replies WILL enlighten and give you confidence to make more and more things. Sure you are out in the proverbial sticks, far from a Tandy. I'm betting you have a computer since your here. That's all you need! Look around, shop around and you'll be amazed at what you can find and do. Here's my BIG hint, Ready? Do you live close to a graveyard or monument maker? I did and I stopped by asking to buy a blank headstone. It was EXPENSIVE as hell! Then the guy said he had a few "MISTAKES" out back and if they were what I wanted he'd let it go for $20.00 Done DEAL!!!! Best $20.00 I ever spent doing this craft! Hands down the BEST INVESTMENT next to finding an old surface table at a machine shop. I will NEVER break it nor wear it out. Happy pounding Boris and before long you'll be very adept at this craft. Members BorisBaddenov Posted December 4, 2018 Author Members Report Posted December 4, 2018 There is a local place to get headstones - I hadnt thought of them. I was thinking of going to the kitchen counter top guys - to see if they have a granite scrap. With that said, I'm not in ANY hurry to do tooling/carving, so while I might purchase a 'stone' - I'm not going to need it for a while I appreciate every reply - I'm not sure if I was expecting this many or not. I have been "advised" to NOT make any purchases before the 25th of Dec I was surprised to discover that I was NOT on the naughty list this year! Peace- Boris Quote
Contributing Member fredk Posted December 4, 2018 Contributing Member Report Posted December 4, 2018 A granite slab is of use other than stamping/tooling on. You can hold your leather on it to skive the edges - when the skive blade hits the granite neither it nor the surface are damaged. You can hold your leather on it to burnish the grain or the flesh side. Quote Al speling misteaks aer all mi own werk..
Members zuludog Posted December 4, 2018 Members Report Posted December 4, 2018 I don't do tooling so I don't need anything like a granite or marble slab, but I do skive, so I need a hard, glossy surface. I use the glass door off an old cooker; it's also useful when dyeing small items. If you're just starting and don't yet have any sharpening stones you can lay a sheet of wet & dry paper on the glass You could also use the glass shelves from an old fridge Quote
Members BorisBaddenov Posted December 4, 2018 Author Members Report Posted December 4, 2018 (edited) I have glass that I use for cutting intricate masking tape designs. Put the tape on the glass, draw on the tape, cut on the lines, remove tape from glass, put tape on project, paint project, remove tape. That same glass can be used like Zulu described. Thanks! Yeah, I got caught out like that once too... I am still awaiting my Scalextric Set from 1972! Santa is not necessarily reliable, I got a single soccer boot one year, with a note to say if I was good the other would come with the birthday elf. My Aunt brought it on 26th Dec, but I have never trusted Santa since. Happy to eat, drink and be merry, just not Santa Focussed Quote No longer following it.
