Members SouthernCross Posted December 20, 2018 Members Report Posted December 20, 2018 When doing a two-layer belt, should you use a lower grade leather for the inner part (liner)...IF you're going to stitch them together and call it a quality belt. Think Hermann Oak on the outside, Tandy pre-cut straps on the inside. What's the expert's opinions on this. That's you, Dwight. Quote
Members SaddleBags Posted December 20, 2018 Members Report Posted December 20, 2018 IMHO. usually the lining is thinner. but not necessarily "lower grade". Nothing wrong with your plan, as long as the result is what you want it to be. Quote
Members VabaX Posted December 20, 2018 Members Report Posted December 20, 2018 Are any of their pre-cut straps thin enough to be used as a lining? you wouldnt want to end up with a 6mm thick belt... Quote

I can't remember the exact thickness, but last time I worked with a Tandy strap it appeared to be about 7-8 oz leather. For a heavy duty belt that would be good for carrying a gun, I was thinking about two layers of 7-8 oz glued and stitched together. Quote

Holy crap man, 2 layers of 7-8 would like a light weight powerlifting belt. I do my belts out of one strap of ~9 ounce, and they're pretty solid belts Quote
Members SaddleBags Posted December 20, 2018 Members Report Posted December 20, 2018 Roger on the single 9 oz. 6-7 if you're going to line it. Unless of course you want something handy to pull a truck out of the mud!!! Don't over do it or it will never be worn. Quote
Members Hildebrand Posted December 20, 2018 Members Report Posted December 20, 2018 Sage advice here, I made one out of 2 7-8 oz layers and that thing will stand my pants up on its own. Its beautiful and stiff but really not practical. Todd 58 minutes ago, VabaX said: Holy crap man, 2 layers of 7-8 would like a light weight powerlifting belt. Members greystoneleatherllc Posted December 21, 2018 Members Report Posted December 21, 2018 I generally make my belts 10-12 oz, for my medium weight dress belts I use W&C EB on the front backed with HO back cut or double shoulders both split to @ 5-6 0z Quote
Members SouthernCross Posted December 21, 2018 Author Members Report Posted December 21, 2018 Greystone, what is "EB"? I just received a whole side of W&C, but I just asked for "firm temper holster leather". Quote
